I Really Like Chris Cornell’s Cover of Prince and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”

sinead o'cornellIn 1990, a young Irish singer named Sinéad O’Connor scored a massive hit with a song called “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was written by Prince. She went on Saturday Night Live, tore up a photo of the Pope, and became the butt of a thousand ladies-with-shaved-head jokes. It was the height of her fame.

At that same time, a young band from Seattle called Soundgarden was touring was behind their album Louder Than Love and working on their next release, Badmotorfinger, which would score them their first radio hits and a gig opening for Guns N’ Roses, leading to their eventual superstardom with Superunknown.

If, at this time, you had posited that Soundgarden’s lead singer, Chris Cornell, might someday cover Ms. O’Connor’s mega-hit, you probably would have been called an idiot.

But times have changed, Cornell has displayed a softer side many times, and, well… here we are! Not only is Cornell covering O’Connor, but he’s nailing it. I’ve seen this guy have good nights live and bad nights live, but when he’s on, his voice is still out of this world.

Watch Cornell be all sensitive n’ shit and shame the auto-tune generation below:
