Fucking InvincibleFucking Invincible
I Hate Myself And Want You To Die EP (Atomic Action)
On a playlist with: Full Of Hell, Mind Eraser, Retox
Listen I Hate Myself And Want You To Die full stream (here)

Let’s play a game! Choose the situation which you think best embodies the spirit of the I Hate Myself And Want You To Die EP: 1) meeting a guy for lunch and discovering that he has an unusually firm handshake, 2) trying on pants at the store, 3) getting a strong whiff of ass while walking behind an over-sized human on the street, or 4) rushing to the bathroom right after getting home only to fumble with your pants, yanking your earbuds out and causing you to pee all over yourself.

Baroness_PURPLE_ABXN001_Cover_1600_RGB-LOWBaroness
Purple (Abraxan Hymns)
On a playlist with: Kylesa, early The Ocean, Neurosis
Listen Purple full stream (here)
Read Max Frank MetalSucks review (here)

Purple is a likable album, and it’s not bad either. But as Dr. Frank wrote, Baroness’ earlier albums seemed more like a collection of ideas rather than fully-fleshed composition. In some senses though, Purple is over-polished, the edgy (not necessarily metal) pretenses honed smooth with power rhythms and weak vocals. It’s an album which immediately fades into the background, which is not a flaw alone, but it fails to leave that subliminal/subconscious impression that it has been heard.

KomburKombur
I Am Alpha (Imminence)
On a playlist with: ugh
Listen “Prisms” (here)

Oh great. More. Deathcore. What the world needs. Is some more. Deathcore. This deathcore hits. Hard. Fast. Super brutal. Baby. But honestly. It sounds the same. As every other. Deathcore. Band. It’s annoying. Just like. Reading paragraphs. Like this. Because that. Is. What it is. Like. To listen. To. This. Kind. Of. Deathcore.

DolvenDolven
Navigating The Labyrinth (Goatprayer)
On a playlist with: Kauan, Lord Of The Rings, Katatonia
Listen Navigating The Labyrinth full stream (here)

“Heavy music played lightly,” the Bandcamp page reads. “Melancholy, yet uplifting. Dark, yet bright. Just like this life we are living day to day.” Filed under “acoustic doom” this album is. Normally, bands’ self-descriptions are hilariously hyperbolic and woefully inaccurate. In this case, though, it’s bang on: Navigating The Labyrinth is the perfect year-end album. Meditative, particular, and calming, it still manages to stimulate, and that’s the magic!

GravewurmGravewurm
Doomed To Eternity (Hells Headbangers)
On a playlist with: Sangus, Hellhammer, Bathory
Listen “The One True Soul Of Darkness” (here)

Gravewurm is the band you completely forget about until they release another album. Doomed To Eternity is number 11, and it appears that the formula is still a winning one, like KFC’s. Also it comes out on Christmas day, which means you can tell Santa to go fuck himself! Really, just switch the letters around: Santa becomes Satan, and then your stockings (which are now sewn from actual human skin) can be rife with cult-y, dark albums featuring black-and-white cover art.

·

DegialDegial
Savage Mutiny (Soulfood)
On a playlist with: Hatespawn, Venefixion, Natur
Listen “Savage Mutiny” (here)

One great thing about Degial is that they are signed to a label whose name I can’t say without getting sexually aroused. Another great thing (of course) is that they write kickass raw death metal. Savage Mutiny is a big fuck-you to all the embellished, hyper-produced, big-box DM we all love. Okay, maybe there’s no true animosity, but you can’t keep albums like these in the same bin as albums like those — the dirty fighter always wins.
