Darius Marder must be one of us: the co-screenwriter of A Place Beyond the Pines, which featured Ryan Gosling as a Metallica-loving bank robber, will make his directorial debut with The Sound of MetalFifty Shades of Grey submissive Dakota Johnson and The Danish Girl‘s Matthias Schoenaerts will play bandmates — she the singer, he the drummer — who have to cope with the fact that the latter musician is going deaf. So, basically, the same storyline the Tessa Thompson character has in Creed, only with metal.

Gotta be honest: I thought A Place Beyond the Pines was awful, and my experience with Johnson is limited to her small roles in The Social Network and 21 Jump Street. But I’ve seen Schoenaerts in a bunch of stuff, and he’s a talented guy. Also: who amongst us can’t relate to this story? Loss of hearing from loud music is both my number two fear (after being forced to listen to Thy Art is Murder) and my number two concern that I don’t actually do very much to prevent (after my diet). We’ve talked about the import of wearing ear plugs here at MetalSucks before, but now we’ve got Hollywood on our side. Hoo-ray!

No word on when The Sound of Metal will be released, but Deadline reports that it’s scheduled to commence production in August.
