Foo Fighters are on Indefinite Hiatus, Laughing At Us All

Yesterday, we reported that Foo Fighters were preparing to make a big announcement over social media. Well, last night around nine, they posted the following video.

Just… watch it. Nick Lachey’s in it. Yeah.

I’m just dumbstruck. Rarely does a band fuck with everyone at once so deftly. This video is gold, and my opinion of Foo Fighters has just skyrocketed. Nice shout-out to Metal Injection, by the way.

The message at the end of the video is that Foo Fighters aren’t breaking up, and that Dave Grohl’s not going solo. They’re just on indefinite hiatus, as drummer Taylor Hawkins told Artisan News back in January. You can watch the video below, but here’s the gist of it from Hawkins:

“We’re on ‘ihateus’ right now, we’re on an indefinite ‘ihateus’. But that’s not because we don’t love each other, or don’t want to make music together… We as a band could go into the studio tomorrow and have just as much fun as we ever had, but I think the world needs a break from us for a little while.”

So, first off, nothing’s changed. The band’s pretty much been on hiatus since the end of the Sonic Highways tour. So if you were desperately hoping the announcement was about new Foo Fighters music, I guess you’re disappointed but just back where you started.

But more importantly, I like Hawkins’ idea that the world needs a break from this band. For a generation of fans, Foo Fighters is mainstream rock at its best, but they’ve been playing that role for a long-ass time. As someone who’s sometimes worried by the seeming lack of new and interesting large-form rock music these days, I think it might be all right for some of the old guard to rest for a moment and see who else is there to take up the mantle.

Anyway, bravo to these guys for confronting insane media scrutiny by basically flicking boogers at us all. We totally deserved it.
