Sumac (Isis, Baptists, Russian Circles) Release New Song “Rigid Man”

MetalSucks scribe Kelsey Chapstick proclaimed 2016 the year of post-metal, and she wasn’t wrong: without even knowing that Sumac would be releasing a new album this year, she perhaps willed it into existence!

Sumac — who feature Aaron Turner of Isis, Nick Yacyshyn of Baptists, and Brian Cook of Russian Circles — just announced they will release What One Becomes, an hour-long, double LP (and single CD), on June 10th via Thrill Jockey. The album was tracked at The Unknown in Anacortes, WA and mixed at GodCity Studios in Salem, MA with Kurt Ballou, and will feature five tracks of uncompromising, soul-crushing weight.

One of those, “Rigid Man,” just hit the waves… and man, it’s fucking great, picking up exactly where the band’s debut album The Deal left off. What I like most about this supergroup is they don’t sound like the sum of their parts; neither Isis, Baptists or Russian Circles leave too much of a sonic imprint here, instead leaving Sumac to be their own gracefully lumbering beast. This is without a doubt the heaviest material any of these three men have ever put out, and it’s certainly making a run at being their best.
