Schammasch. Just saying it (schamm-maaashh) makes you want to slam and smash and etc. But really, this symphonic, forward-thinking black metal is music for contemplation and introspection! This is their third full-length, and ostensibly their best. Also it’s massive. Like, three-discs 100-minutes massive. Like, encyclopedic, universal, and all-encompassing, in the most stimulating and challenging ways sonically possible.

You’re in luck if you’re: 1) stoned, 2) planning on being stoned, 3) pretending you’re stoned, 4) have too many Bic lighters laying around. Gargantuan atmosphere, vocals slow-mo’d but then pitch-shifted back to normal. Downtuning, but not without great build-ups and plenty of layering. Also, while listening, get some visual stimulation via cool artwork/photography. Ain’t bad!

Pain Cleanses Every Doubt isn’t about butterflies or cinnamon rolls or some shit. More like a shank jabbed right into your squashy gut, only instead of like moaning or screaming, you grimace manically and grab the hand that kills you to accelerate death! Exactly like this, actually. Okay, don’t get crazy with this album. But it’s a seriously strong black metal pursuit from Germany which you should dig.

In case you missed it, False Highs, True Lows was deemed “awesome chaotic metal” and “fuck yeah” by astute MS readers. Correctamundo. If schizophrenia, mania, or even hypomania were to manifest musically, this would be it. There’s a devastation that must occur inwardly in order to absorb the massive blackened storm of Throatruiner’s best band.

Rising

Oceans Into Their Graves is super-promising, ultra-exciting. Rising has a delicious brand of groovy, dark-rock + metal crunch. The riffs are solid. The album art is cool. The songwriting is classic. The production is smooth. The execution is pretty much flawless. Also, they’re like mega-Euro.

Fallujah

Think of Fallujah as Rivers Of Nihil’s stranger and moodier cousin. Yes, totally different lineages, a different jam altogether. The approach, though, it’s equal: follow the textbook, but append a final chapter,  i.e. a fuckin’ pièce de résistance. Dreamless anticipates what you want to hear, delivers, but then alters your mind’s mind altogether. Gazed upon ceaselessly, Fallujah could’ve royally f’d up this follow-up to the very saucy The Flesh Prevails. But nope, they’ve nailed it to the cross.
