White Zombie It Came From N.Y.C. cassette

In 2016, you couldn’t be blamed for missing the point of a new White Zombie anthology. After all, Rob Zombie’s old band’s discography arrived in a tidy, value-priced box set in 2008. But as of Tuesday, the forthcoming collection remastered by White Zombie guitarist J. Yuenger finally makes more sense: It features six unreleased tracks from their first two recording sessions. Ah.

One such lost track, “Scarecrow #2” (below, via Wall Street Journal) was created 30 years ago (!) by the same line-up that yielded the “Pig Heaven” single — Zombie, founding bassist Sean Yseult, and a guitarist named Tim Jeffs. In a new interview, Yseult heralds the jam’s coolness, its spirit of experimentation, and its distinction from an earlier version via Jeffs’ hints of Stevie Ray Vaughn. A less fond appraisal may instead use the terms “precocious,” “tuneless,” and “undercooked.” Either way, it’s historic!

The new White Zombie box set It Came From N.Y.C. is out June 3 on vinyl and CD via Numero Group. Pre-order here.
