Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to Shit That Comes Out Today, your Satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams — and we usually stick ‘em in a fancy Spotify playlist too (below) — all for your jammage! Now crank this shit up.

Old Souls (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Ashbringer, Panopticon, Abyssal
Listen Old Souls full stream (here)

You know, all this metallic bashing and clanging can ruin your frickin’ cortex. Solution: more bashing and clanging, but less metallic, in a way. Non-metal ppl will be like lol all this shit is indecipherable; so let it be a lesson: you need raw earth i.e. fresh soil, organic buildups that don’t feel consciously constructed but rather evolutionary via a simpler beginning. Old Souls is g-pa’s atmospheric black metal album (he smokes powerful cigarettes and watches soft-core pornography in his stinky brown recliner). Breathe deeply and let the roots grow through your rotting body.

gojira - magma dr evil editionGojira
Magma (Roadrunner)
On a playlist with: Mastodon, Textures, Vildhjarta
Listen “Stranded” (here) “Silvera” (here)
Read Axl Rosenberg MetalSucks review (here)

Magma is irrefutable evidence that Gojira is la Mastodon de Europe. Not as spaced out (yet… did Mastodon discover the dankest bud known to mankind?), but certainly a departure from the rigidity of their post-Meshuggah low-string style on albums prior. Gojira could’ve easily gone godjenta, but they refused ’cause that would ruin the fucking music. It’s fascinating watching bands evolve, especially the bigger ones, with their magazine covers and such; the question is: to what extent does all the noise and gloss and politics affect a band’s creative evolution?

Rïcïnn
Lian (Blood)
On a playlist with: Cult Of Luna, Thomas Giles’ spacier stuff
Listen Lian full stream (here)

Calm down time now. Seconds after you dig into Lian you’ll feel slightly intox. Don’t worry, that’s just relaxation setting in. Mood, space, ethos. Rïcïnn has pipes indeed: check out other work here. Besides, you can’t live on just metal, like you can’t live on just toaster pastries and store-brand peanut butter. Well, you can, but then you’re missing out on delicacy and fantasy and even a little bit of special excitement.

Audubon (Prosthetic)
On a playlist with: Earth, Electric Wizard, Spelljammer
Listen Audobon full stream (here)

With about 4.2 million stoner doom/rock bands out there, filtering becomes tiresome. Dig around some trendy/creative enclaves though and maybe you’ll find the proverbial gem in the turd log. Audobon is said gem. You get big screams, rough and crunchy doom riffs, and all the song titles are in capital letters. If you want anything else, get it yourself goddammit!

vexVex
Sky Exile (Eihwaz)
On a playlist with: Amiensus, Oak Pantheon, Saor
Listen “The Cygnus Light” (here) “Dark Skies Painted” (here)

Cool name: check. Cool album title: check. Rad music: pretty much! Music video: eh, it’s pretty weird, illustrating the slight dorkiness of this otherwise saucy musical production. Easily filed under easy listening; maybe it’s better not to hear the author’s voice before reading his books? There’s a softness and don’t-mind-me-ness about Sky Exile which makes it more or less impervious to commentary. It just is, and so are you!
