Summer Slaughter 2016

If you were planning to go the July 23 date of this year’s Summer Slaughter tour in Orlando, Florida, you’re out of luck: the date has been cancelled in light of the horrific shooting at the Pulse nightclub on June 12.

The show would have taken place at The Plaza Live, which is a few miles from Pulse; it will now take place instead at Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale, which is more than two-hundred miles from Pulse. I guess fans could drive to the Fort Lauderdale date instead, if they don’t mind a three-hour-plus trip each way, but they’d probably be better off driving a mere ninety minutes each way to the July 24 date at The Ritz Ybor in Tampa.

Was the change of venue really necessary? On the one hand, severe concerns about performer and audience safety are totally undersatandable right now; on the other hand, between now and the time Summer Slaughter would have played The Plaza, plenty of other acts — including fellow metallers Zakk Wylde and Buckcherry — will have performed there.

That being said, I’m not even sure this was a safety issue; perhaps the thinking was simply that holding an Orlando area concert prominently featuring a synonym for murder in its name would be in bad taste. Which is also a valid concern.
