Mithras - On Strange Loops

Back in March, the mighty Mithras announced On Strange Loops, their first full-length in nine years (and their first new music of any kind in five). That announcement brought with it a debut single, “The Statue on the Island,” which Vince praised as “a death metal ripper that goes for the throat right out of the gate,” while noting that the track “hasn’t got as much of that slow, punishing groove for which Mithras are known.”

Now the band has released another Loopy song, “Between Scylla and Charybdis,” and it’s very much in line with “Island” — it rips, but it doesn’t stomp. Which isn’t a bad thing per se, but it was definitely the groove that attracted me to Mithras in the first place. I hope they haven’t abandoned that aspect of their sound altogether… they’ve got a deathy mathcore thing going on here, which seems fine in theory, but isn’t actually doing much for me.

But hey, that’s just me! You folks obviously have no problem formulating your own opinions. So listen to “Between Scylla and Charybdis” below and see what you think for yourself. On Strange Loops comes out October 21 on Willowtip. You can pre-order it here (physical) or here (digital).
