Listen to the New Ulcerate Song “Extinguished Light”

0

Ulcerate’s 2011 release The Destroyers of All destroyed all the grey matter inside my brain and landed on my Top 15 list for the year, but I felt that their 2013 follow-up Vermis fell just a little bit short, if I’m being honest. But hey, that’s just one guy’s opinion, and I think Ulcerate are still an absolute beast of a band, among my favorites when it comes to this style of skronked out, visceral, gut-churning death metal.

Now, nearly two months after announcing their upcoming album Shrines of Paralysis, we get to hear brand new Ulcerate music for the first time in three years. Check out “Extinguished Light” below via Relapse Records’ Soundcloud.

First listen, quick shot reaction: my main gripe with Vermis was that the production and mixing didn’t allow the band’s incredible instrumental work to shine — it all sounded garbled and muddy — and I think they’ve solved that issue here. The cut still sounds super raw — it’s not clean and polished like The Destroyers of All — but it’s been done in such a way that everything cuts through the mix, and the rawness only adds to the bowel-inducing feeling Ulcerate’s music invokes. It’s nasty as fuck.

Shrines of Paralysis comes out on October 28th via Relapse; pre-order here. Catch Ulcerate on tour with Zhrine and Phobocosm in North America this fall; scroll down for dates.
