This New Khemmis Track Will Obliterate Your Friday

If I have one criticism of Denver doom-meisters Khemmis, it’s that the music on their previous album, Absolution, is all very mid-paced and ethereal; things rarely pick up and thrash. Obviously they’re a doom metal band, so that’s not exactly their wheelhouse, but still.

But this morning, I listened to “Three Gates,” the track from their upcoming album Hunted that they just premiered through Decibel, and…

This track slays. It starts fast and punchy, and even when it slows down it stays kinetic and bludgeoning. The guitar harmonies feel firm and to the point, less like weed smoke and more like lightning (weed lightning? Can there be such a thing?). The soaring vocals the band is known for are still there, but they’re divided by some truly brutal orc-snarls. This track officially takes Khemmis a step up in my estimation, setting them apart from the doom bands out there content to plod softly along.

Listen to “Three Gates” right fucking now and kick your week off of a cliff and into a live volcano. Khemmis’ Hunted drops October 21st from 20 Buck Spin. Pre-order it here.
