“Take Me” Away from The New Korn Track

0

I’m not one of those people who deeply hates Korn. They’re certainly not the worst of the Class of ’99 — hell, not even the fifth-worst. And “Here To Stay” and “Ball Tongue” are cool songs. Hey, let’s listen to “Ball Tongue!”

Aw, man, what a classic.

Now, that said, I’m sad to report that the new Korn track eats a dog’s lipstick. But it’s not for the reason you think. It’s because the song (which premiered via the Wall Street Journal–way to stay in touch with the youth of today, guys!) is doing this glimmery positive thing that’s so popular in hard rock these days. There’s a lot of soaring keyboards in the background that suggest light breaking through clouds, and Jonathan Davis is doing these big warbly vocals on the chorus.

It just doesn’t sound like Korn. If it were super hip-hopped out, or super mall-gothed out, I’d think, Whatever, because hey, that’s Korn for you. But this? Trying to sound like Soilwork while still being a nu-dub band or whatever? Nah, fuck that. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Listen to “Take Me” below. Korn’s new album, Emocore Album Title From Eight Years Ago, comes out on Friday the 21st.
