Death Metal is Alive and Well in Portugal Thanks to Colosso; Watch their Video for “A Noxious Reflection” Right Now!

Death metal is my favorite metal subgenre; something about its unforgiving presentation and utter extremity really appeals to the edgelord metalhead in me. Lately, we’ve been seeing a trend of blackened death, and that’s fantastic, but like any fad it gets more and more tired as it continues. That being said, it’s always refreshing when a familiar genre manages to blend itself with something else to create a new — or at least uncommon  — sound that goes against the grain. This is exactly what Portugal’s Colosso have done.

We’ve talked briefly about Colosso before in our “Unsigned and Unholy” segments, but I don’t think we’ve ever done them enough justice. By taking slivers of industrial and combining it with familiar death metal template, Colosso have managed to release an album that is both blazing and heavy. Their new track, “A Noxious Reflection” takes hints of material from artists like Sepultura, Cattle Decapitation, and Godflesh, and throws it into a blender on high with a variety of other bits and pieces. The result is this puree of perfection from start to finish. The highlight for me was around the 3:50 mark where the song takes a shift into a melodic chorus with semi-clean vocals that DON’T FUCKING SUCK!

Check out the video below. It’s amazing from start to finish.

Colosso’s latest album, Obnoxious is out now via Apewhale and you can order it right here.
