Mick Thomson Becomes Third Slipknot Member to Undergo Spinal Surgery in Less Than a Year

0

I suffer from chronic back pain, so I get it: it’s the fucking worst, and when you’re in pain you’ll do anything to feel better. But there is a much better, more effective way to deal with back pain than through surgery. It kills me to see all these metal musicians — whose backs and necks are torched from years of performing, no doubt — needlessly going under the knife at the urging of doctors for problems that will only just creep back up with time and could be solved, permanently, in other ways.

In any case, perhaps inspired by his bandmates Corey Taylor and Jim Root, Slipknot guitarist Mick Thomson is the latest member of the masked nine to go under the knife for disc replacement surgery, which at least isn’t as bad as spinal fusion (which has been proven to be no more effective than nonsurgical treatments; at least Taylor and Root had fractured vertebrae in addition to disc issues, which could be legitimate cause for surgery). Thomson announced on Instagram:

I recently joined the cyborg club. Sore as fuck but hope to be back to mid 2000s banging by our next record cycle. Should probably just have every disc replaced all the way down to be safe. Dr. Perri and the entire staff were awesome.

We hope you feel better, soon, Mick. Next time, Google Dr. John Sarno.

Here’s the Instagram post with two different X-rays. You can see the replaced disc at the base of his next (not sure what the squiggle at the top is):
