Hello MetalSucks reader! Welcome to Shit That Comes Out Today, your Satanic bible of this week’s heavy new releases. We list ‘em, we spotlight ‘em, we link you to their preview jams and full streams all for your jammage. Now crank this shit up!

lanternLantern
II: Morphosis (Dark Descent)
On a playlist with: Vorum, Denouncement Pyre, Beyond
Listen “Black Miasma” “Cleansing Of The Air” (here) “Lucid Endlessness” (here)

Lantern’s 2013 debut Below surprised us twice, first when we first heard it (and worshipped it immediately) and then when we shared it with MS readers (and reeled at the extent to which you agreed with us). Lantern’s return here in 2017, therefore, is incredibly welcome, though surprisingly not yet wonderful; II: Morphosis is gritty, brown, and stood at attention while Below was distant, unknowable, and misty. Let’s all keep in touch on this one, maybe it’s a late-bloomer.

hyborianHyborian
Hyborian: Volume 1 (The Company)
On a playlist with: High On Fire, Mastodon’s Crack The Skye, Voivod
Listen Hyborian: Volume 1 full stream (here)

Hyborian singer Martin Bush on the stories and secrets of their debut album: “The Traveller is a being that exists outside of humanity’s understanding of space and time. He is the source of all life in the universe, but is not omnipresent. He wanders the cosmos, visiting and recording times of great strife or hardship, great suffering or great triumph. We are his chosen mouthpiece on Earth, so we relate those stories, whether from far in the past or far in the future. We are also pretty into cryptography, so there are several hidden messages on the album from The Traveller if the listener is clever enough to find them.”

·

anomalieAnomalie
Visions (Art Of Propaganda)
On a playlist with: Xasthur, Harakiri For The Sky, Leviathan
Listen Visions full stream (here)

The difference between extreme metal and depressive extreme metal is the difference between feeling hate and feeling hated. Even if you aren’t suicidal, and therefore you struggle to connect to Anomalie and their ilk, their continued health at very least annoys extreme metal’s conquest-fetishists who might wish to stake out extreme metal for the powerful. That’s reason enough to treasure the bummed as much as the bummers anyway.

·

entartung-1Entartung
Baptised Into The Faith Of Lust (WTC)
On a playlist with: Sargeist, Nagelfar, Imperium Dekadenz
Listen “Black Dog Of God” (here)

Knowing that members of Entartung might dash off a hundred words about their cover art’s origins in 19th Century painting (at left) and may flaunt lyrics that explore themes by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Charles Baudelaire, we might expect black metal a touch more exotic than Baptised‘s by the numbers second wave rumble. This one might need five or ten listens to recognize what it reveals.

·

iron-magazineIron Magazine
Queen Of Hell EP (Ektro)
On a playlist with: Aktor, Rainbow’s Down To Earth, Night Flight Orchestra
Listen “Queen Of Hell” (here) “Foes To Fire” (here)

As far as unexpected pairings go go, a collaboration of Canadian hard rockers Danko Jones and Finnish avant icons Circle seems about as unlikely as a record by Monster Magnet and Radiohead. Its results are less surprising, however, as Iron Magazine’s plastic ’80s AOR vibes like another side project with which it shares a member, Aktor (Circle’s Jussi Lehtisalo with Dawnbringer/High Spirts dude Chris Black). May every heavy musician fill their free time with a weird hard rock project!!!

·

forming-the-voidForming The Void
Relic (Argonauta)
On a playlist with: Torche, Lo-Pan, Mutoid Man
Listen Relic full stream (here)

No matter your level of tolerance for slow, naturalist metal, your attention is locked down by Forming The Void. Sure, it takes seven minutes for a conventional pop song like album opener “After Earth” to run its course at a magmatic (not glacial) pace, it’s the best pop song you’ve heard in weeks — and the least awesome among seven others, including a daring, triumphant recasting of just the most iconic song ever. Crank it up!
