Mario Maglieri, owner and founder of the Los Angeles hard rock and heavy metal landmarks The Rainbow Bar and Grill and The Whisky a Go Go, has passed away. The Rainbow broke the news on Facebook:

“Dear Rainbow friends and family, it is with great sadness to announce the passing of our beloved Mario Maglieri.

“Owner and founder of The Rainbow Bar And Grill and The Whisky a Go Go.

“He passed this morning while surrounded by loved ones.

“We will announce services shortly.

“We ask that you please allow the family time to grieve.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The importance of The Rainbow and The Whisky to rock history should have not to be explained to anyone; The Whisky — the first venue ever to be inducted into The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame — helped launch the careers of countless bands, while we all know that Lemmy more or less lived at The Rainbow, which also made multiple appearances in Guns N’ Roses videos. There’s a good reason why Maglieri was known as “The Godfather of the Sunset Strip.”

Our hearts go out to Maglieri’s loved ones. Everyone remember to do some shots in his honor this weekend.
