Video: Devin Townsend, Steve Vai, Nuno Bettencourt and Grace Potter Perform “Get the Funk Out”

The metalnets freaked out last week at the revelation that Devin Townsend and Steve Vai would reunite on stage for the first time in 25 years at Norway’s Starmus Festival, which took place this past weekend. Townsend, of course, was the vocalist on Vai’s 1993 album, Sex & Religion.

So how did the actual performance stack up against the anticipation? Contrary to what most folks were expecting, the two didn’t perform a reprise of one of their old tracks together (or, if they did perform one of those older tracks, no one’s posted footage of it yet) but instead a cover of Extreme’s classic “Get the Funk Out” with Nuno Bettencourt and Grace Potter on guitar. According to Ghost Cult Mag:

“Steve Vai opened the gig with a 12-song set, and then the show continued on with solo performances by Nuno Bettencourt, Grace Potter, and Devin Townsend. After Devin finished, all of the musicians came out for a special “Get The Funk Out” jam session.”

Check out footage of the jam below. It’s pretty cool, but not gonna lie, I was really hoping to hear Townsend fucking wail on one of those old Vai tracks! Serves me right for being all nostalgic and stuck in the past… if his attitude about playing old Strapping Young Lad material is any indication, Townsend would probably recoil at the very idea.
