New Iron Maiden Comic Book Will Give Eddie the Head a Narrative

Say, just who is this Eddie the Head fellow, anyway? Where did he come from? What are his hopes, his dreams, his innermost secrets?

These are questions no one has ever asked themselves, but it sounds like we may be getting some answers regardless: Nerdist reports that Iron Maiden are teaming up with the makers of the long-running Heavy Metal comic/magazine for Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast. Much like the mobile game with which it shares a moniker, Legacy of the Beast centers around Eddie, whose “immortal soul is shattered and strewn across the cosmos,” as he attempts to battle his way through the worlds depicted on various Maiden album covers. But this won’t just be Maiden porn! It will have a plot, too:

“As a lifelong fan of Iron Maiden, it is a privilege to publish the first comic giving a narrative to their iconic mascot, Eddie,” Heavy Metal’s Jeff Krelitz said of the project. “When we discussed the potential of coming together on this project it was immediately clear that there was no better home for Iron Maiden than Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal’s nearly half-century-long history of either working with or launching the careers of only the most accomplished artists continues here with the amazing team Iron Maiden has working on this series.”

I’m reticent to learn too much about Eddie, or even to humanize him to a certain degree; much like the Xenomorph, I think he works just fine as mysterious creature about whom we actually know very little. That being said, I’m always open to being proven wrong! I’m certainly surprised it took someone this long to come up with the idea for an Eddie comic book.

Legacy of the Beast was written by Llexi Leon and Ian Edginton and has art by Kevin J.  West. It will debut in July’s Heavy Metal #287. There are some samples for your viewing pleasure below.
