Mastodon Return to Game of Thrones, Announce Details of New EP

So did everyone see the season finale of Game of Thrones last night? I thought it was great! And by “great,” I mean “I literally had to take lorazepam to calm the amount of anxiety I felt over which characters might die.” My unhealthy level of emotional attachment to fictional people on a cable show being what it is, I completely missed Mastodon’s Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher making yet another cameo as White Walkers. In fact, I specifically remember this shot, and I wasn’t even looking at the foreground, where they’re placed — I was focused on the fact that the Army of the Dead now includes at least two giants in addition to their new blue-fire-breathing friend (screencap courtesy of Metal Injection):

By the way, the Night King riding a frickin’ zombie dragon may be the single most metal image on the year. I mean. FUCK.

In other Mastodon news, the band has also revealed more details of their semi-surprise new EP, Cold Dark Place. Specifically:

  • The rumored September 22 release date is confirmed.
  • Three of EP’s four tracks are from the Once More ‘Round the Sun sessions with producer Nick Raskulinecz: “North Side Star,” “Blue Walsh,” and the title track.
  • One of the EP’s four tracks is from the Emperor of Sand sessions with producer Brendan O’Brien. It’s called “Toe to Toes.”

And that’s it. But September 22! That’s less than a month away! So now you have a reason to make sure you don’t drink yourself to death on Labor Day.

While we wait patiently for a taste of new music, enjoy this video about the making of the EP’s cover art:
