Dream-Sludge Duo Spotlights Release New Single, “What is This? Where are We?”

0

MS scribe Chain Wallace came up with the perfect genre tag for Spotlights when writing up their late 2016 EP Spiders: “dream-sludge.”

Put another way: how often do you encounter a band that taps both Crowbar and Weezer as influences?

The prolific husband and wife duo — they released a full-length last year as well, Tidals — is poised to put out another album before year’s end. The album’s latest single, “What is This? Where are We?” does exactly what Spotlights have proven they do so well over the past year plus: mix devastatingly heavy sludge riffs with dreamy soundscapes that are at once depressing and uplifting. It’s difficult to know what to feel when listening other than impressed at how seamlessly Mario and Sarah Quintero pull off the combination of two seemingly disparate sounds.

Seismic comes out on October 6th via Ipecac Records. Spotlights are currently out on tour with Melvins, and they’ll finish off 2017 as support for Hundredth. All of the dates — and the track stream — are below.
