Necessary Roughness, Week 9: Football Fatigue

0

Necessary Roughness DJ ScullyWell, the Bills ate it on Thursday, sparing me from having to write an all-Buffalo post. While I would have enjoyed posting photos of #billsmafia fans barfing and fighting, I’m glad I don’t have to. Something noteworthy that DID come from this week’s Thursday Bills/Jets game is this quote from notable douchebag, Bills Guard Richie Incognito:

“They suck,” Incognito said of Thursday games. “They throw a wrench in our schedule. It’s absolutely ridiculous that we have to do this. As physical as this game is, as much work and preparation that goes into this, to force us to play games on four-day weeks, it’s completely unfair and bullshit. The league makes money off it, and that’s all they care about anyway.”

You should go to this SI story for even more shockingly well thought-out quotes from the guy who nearly everyone agrees is the biggest asshole in the NFL.

This is the point in the season where it does start to feel like there’s too much football to watch. There’s been a bunch of posts and articles about viewer fatigue leading to the ratings decline felt by the league over the last couple years. It makes sense! Let’s set aside player safety and look at this from just the fans’ point of view. Thursday Night Football, Sunday morning London game, early Sunday slate, late Sunday slate, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football. If you actually wanted/had the time to, you’d be looking at about six games every week you could conceivably watch from beginning to end. That’s about 18 hours of football! That’s a part time job. With a few exceptions this year, the Thursday and London games suck ass because the players are understandably shot!

“Guys, seriously, there is TOO MUCH FOOTBALL!” is an insane point for the guy writing the football article on a metal site to be making, but here I am making it. Something’s gotta give: I can only watch so much! And I feel dirty for being put in a position to agree with what the jackass in the video above.

This week a couple teams got WHOOPED. My beloved Giants had the Rams drop 51 on ’em. I can’t say I didn’t see this coming. What I can say is that I’m glad I have Todd Gurley on my fantasy team. What can be said except that the Rams killed the Giants in every facet of the game and are now sitting pretty in first place in the NFC West. Here’s one of four TDs Goff threw for:

Much to my dismay, the Eagles went ahead and dunked on the Broncos, to the tune of 51-23 After watching the Sunday afternoon games, I think the Eagles will have their hands full with the Cowboys sooner or later, but for now, they can enjoy having the NFL’s best record. They really do look like one of the best teams in the league and getting Jay Ajayi from the Dolphins is only going to make them better. Here’s a bizarre stat that I will not bother to verify:

Speaking of the Cowboys… They owned the Chiefs yesterday. Their offensive line continues to be the clear best in the league year in and year out. Zeke is great, but he wouldn’t be half as good behind almost any other line in the NFL. They can do anything. It was really fun listening to Tony Romo call the Cowboys for the first time. He was totally cool about it and provided a lot of insight as usual. I thought maybe this game would swing back the Chiefs’ way in the second half after this bizarre Tyreek Hill TD, but they couldn’t get anything going after the break.

Luckily for the Chiefs they have a much-needed bye this week and then an inevitable cakewalk through the Giants the following week. I’m willing to chalk this one up to needing a rest after a relatively grueling opening half of the season, but their D needs to shape up if they wanna take the AFC.

Sunday Night was a weird one! The Raiders just do not look like the team they were last year. Mashawn flashed some old BeastMode, but isn’t reliable enough to be their go-to back. They should have put the Dolphins away about four different times in the fourth quarter, but could never quite close it out. If it weren’t for a never ending barrage of dumbshit penalties, the Fins might have actually pulled the upset! Twenty one penalties for 212 yards! That’s obscene. Tom Savage only threw for 219 yards in the Houston/Indy game. In other dark/alarming news, I think Jay Cutler is starting to give a shit. He threw for 34/42 for 311 yards, three TDs and no INTs. Plu,s look at this! He’s actually correcting his own guys…

I guess the Ajayi trade scared everyone into trying this week!

Fantasy Pimp of the Week

TY Hilton! Welcome back, my dude! I guess deactivating Andrew Luck relaxed the hell outta everyone in Indy. 175 yards, two TDs = 29.5 fantasy points. Damn! Check out this crazy ass TD:

Some Random Thoughts

I hate this post so much. I agreed with Richie Incognito, I gave the Eagles and Cowboys props, I whined that there’s too much football and the Giants gave up 51 fucking points. Let’s just steer into the darkness…

Two noteworthy fights this week. Jalen Ramsey vs AJ Green was the better of the two:

I didn’t love this one from Mike Evans and Jameis Winston on Marshon Lattimore. Two punk ass moves. Why is Winston poking Lattimore and then what the FUCK is Evans thinking with that cheap shot?

Andrew Luck is now officially done for the season. I hope for his sake that the Colts didn’t ruin his entire career by fucking around with the poor guy’s shoulder. I want the Caveman to have a great comeback and career, but the Colts might be too shitty to let that happen.

It's alright dude. Maybe they'll release you one day and you can play for a real organization.

OK, enough sadness and misery. Two decent pieces of news came out this week. First is that Josh Gordon is being reinstated. Fingers crossed he and the Browns can become garbage time kings again. I need another flex guy.

Second, Jake Butt, winner of both the Ozzie Newsome and John Mackey awards for being an outstanding tight end. is back practicing with the Broncos. This is only good news because Butt was previously injured by dumbly playing in what was ultimately a meaningless Orange Bowl last year and suffering a torn ACL for it. So that kinda sucks. But, c’mon! It’s Butt’s turn to redefine the Tight End position!

Song for Giants Fans

This might just turn into a sad AIC playlist. We still have 8 more weeks of this shit. Fuck.

If, for some reason, you want to keep this schizophrenic abomination of a playlist for yourself, you can find it on Spotify here.
