Bon Jovi Crush Judas Priest in Fan Votes for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

The fan voting portion of deciding who will be the 2018 inductees into the completely meaningless Rock & Roll Hall of Fame* is over. The good news for metal fans who care for some reason is that Judas Priest cracked the top five; the bad news is that they, along The Moody Blues, Dire Straits, and The Cars, were completely annihilated by Bon Jovi:

  • Bon Jovi: 1,162,098 votes
  • Moody Blues: 947,726
  • Dire Straits: 613,726
  • The Cars: 552,707
  • Judas Priest: 538,467

I have the softest of soft spots for the first six Bon Jovi albums, but trying to argue that their contribution to rock music was greater than literally any other band in the top five is pretty silly. Fans who take this shit seriously, though, should take some comfort in the knowledge that Rage Against the Machine didn’t even crack the top five.

In case you’re curious what this means, well… it means that each of these artists get a single additional vote to be added to the pile of ballots from regular (i.e., not fan) voters, according to the Hall’s website:

“Ballots are then sent to more than 900 historians, members of the music industry and artists—including every living Rock Hall inductee—and the five performers receiving the most votes become that year’s induction class. Beginning in 2012, fans were given the chance to vote for the nominees they’d like to see inducted into the Rock Hall. The top five vote-getters in the public poll form one ballot, which is weighted the same as the rest of the submitted ballots.”

So Judas Priest (and Rage Against the Machine, for that matter) could still make the final cut. The announcement of the official inductees will be made next Wednesday, December 13. Expect MetalSucks not to cover it unless Judas Priest make it in.

*I mean, can you think of a better way to signal “We’re not relevant” than the fact that they use a friggin’ ampersand in their name?
