Shawn “Clown” Crahan on the Next Slipknot Record: “I Feel like This Could Be It for Me”

In 2001, Slipknot’s then-drummer, Joey Jordison, told Rolling Stone that he believed the band had a limited shelf life:

“I don’t think this band can last more than four or five albums. Look what we’ve done on [‘Iowa’]. I know we’ve succeeded every time I listen to it. I think four albums will tie everything together. This band is so physical, it’s literally trimming years off our lives. This music is hard to play, and it’s hard on us. But we love it.”

Of course, Jordison isn’t in the band anymore, and their most recent release, .5: The Gray Chapter, was already their fifth album. Still, my mind went straight to that Jordison quote when I read this quote from a recent Clown interview on Jamey Jasta’s podcast:

“I just spent four months thinking about my life and where I’m at now because I’m at a real honest place of admitting of what I don’t want to be.

“A lot of it is bringing all this emotion to art and music. And honestly, this music that we’re writing writing right now is just like the proof of looking inward and being able to put the first foot down and say, ‘We’re gonna do something for ourselves and write.’

“So we’ve been writing and this music is coming out… I feel weird things are coming but it’s always like that for the guys like us, we get involved in our records and sky all of the sudden changes.

“And we got some stuff man. I feel like this could be it for me. We’re all getting older. I never like telling anyone like, ‘Hey this is it!’ Because I don’t have to, fuck everyone.

“But like I’ve said, I’ve been reflecting and there’s a lot of hard things that I could say about friends, brothers… We’re good, but it’s a big world. I’ve done enough work, I’ve produced and done remixes and art and performed, I’ve done enough where while I was in it none of it was registered.”

What the crap that last “none of it was registered” bit has to do with the rest of what Crahan is saying, I dunno, but I guess it wouldn’t be a Clown interview if it wasn’t at least a little confusing.

In any case, I don’t think any Maggots should lose their shit over this comment right now. For one thing, we still don’t even know when the new Slipknot album is coming out. For another thing, Crahan says it “may” be it for him, not it “will” be it for him. For another another thing, Crahan can always change his mind. And for another another another thing, Slipknot can continue without Crahan (hard though it may be to find someone else to hit an empty keg with an aluminum baseball bat). So let’s just all wait and see what happens, k? K!
