Into the Great Divide coverWhile you may not have heard of the mastermind behind instrumental prog metal outfit Into the Great Divide, if you’ve gotten this far you’re surely familiar with Mike Mangini, Dream Theater drummer of the last several years. And though you may not know his name, you’re also familiar with Richard Chycki, who was the man behind the boards on several Dream Theater and Rush albums and takes that role here as well.

As for said mastermind behind Into the Great Divide… well, we’re not sure who it is either, to be honest. Mangini’s mother? John Myung? The ghost of Roberto Clemente? Could be anyone!

This much we do know: “Test & Enemies,” the first single to be released from the band’s debut, is a hell of an introduction. You’ll hear a whole lot of Dream Theater-isms here — keyboards in a lead role, progressive song structures, complex drumming, nimble guitar work — presented in an instrumental shell that should delight all fans of prog metal. Check it out below.

The band’s self-titled debut album re-interprets Joseph Campbell’s classic and influential 1949 archetype The Hero’s Journey. Voice actor Larry Davis chronicles each movement. The album comes out on January 26th.
