Listen: Slugdge Return with “Putrid Fairytale”

When we last heard from Slugdge, the slug-obsessed U.K. death metal band, who made #4 on my 2015 year-end list and #5 on Dave Mustein’s 2013 year-end list, had signed with Willowtip and were writing their debut for that label (not counting last year’s Cosmic Cornucopia, which is really a re-issue/compilation of the band’s first three releases). That was almost two years ago — long enough, I think, to start to feel impatient.

But feel impatient no more! The group has announced that they shall at last release a new album via Willowtip in March. It’s called Esoteric Malacology

…and if the first single, “Putrid Fairytale,” is any indication, the wait was well worth it. An expertly-written seven-minute prog opus of impossibly catchy riffs and cataclysmic percussions, it’s what I’d call “feel-good death metal”: yeah, it’s angry, but it’s also groovy and, well, fun. Don’t be surprised if this ends up being the best new song you hear today.

Check out “Putrid Fairytale” below. Esoteric Malacology comes out March 2. Pre-order it here, then go sacrifice a mollusk to the Slug Lord in hopes that they come play in the U.S. sometime soon.
