Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018

I’ve been doing this column for a year already? Yikes. It seems like only yesterday that Vince sent this work my way after I was fired from my first desk job for “attitude problems.” Shocking, right? Who would ever have thought that I would have attitude problems in a corporate setting? Anyway, tonight I’ll be busy wrecking the pit at Dying Fetus/Thy Art Is Murder/Rivers of Nihil. I’m also going to see if I can’t convince CJ McMahon that there are maybe two MetalSucks writers who do actually like his band. I’ll be sure to post the results next week. But in the meantime, there’s new music to listen to. You know the drill.

Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018The Sword
Used Future (Razor & Tie)
On a playlist with Clutch, Red Fang and Mastodon
Listen: “Twilight Sunrise”

I’m not sure why I thought the sword were an old band. Old being relative of course, as The Sword started in 2003. Whatever. Used Future will mark the bands 6th album and since Extcretakano has already done a more in-depth analysis of this album than I possibly could this week, so clisten to him: ” In all the best ways, The Sword’s sixth full-length feels like a transmission from a techno-mystical cult who only communicate in frayed-denim guitar licks from forty-plus years ago.” The Sword haven’t exactly broken new ground with Used Future, but it’s a good album nonetheless. You can read the rest of Excretakano’s review here.

Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018Will Haven
Muerte (minus HEAD Records)
On a playlist with Neurosis, Cult of Luna and The Dillinger Escape Plan
Listen: “Winds of Change”

Upon first listen, my reaction to Will Haven was “Well, that’s sure as shit some noise.” And boy, some noise it is. Will Haven play the type of music that I imagine an anxiety attack would enjoy listening to, but that isn’t necessary a bad thing. Fans of The Dillinger Escape Plan will love “Winds of Change” and so will anyone else who likes the sounds of stressful music. Again, not an insult. It’s not exactly something that I would spin regularly, but lots of people like this stuff so if you like any of the bands Will Haven would be on a playlist with, then give this a spin.

Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018The Absence
A Gift For The Obsessed (M-Theory Audio)
On a playlist with Arsis, Nightrade and Mors Principium Est
Listen: Full album stream

A Gift For The Obsessed marks The Absence’s first album in 8 years. Once again, I’m pretty late on the bandwagon with these dudes so although I definitely dig the album so far, or at least what I’ve heard from it. Here’s Axl’s opinion instead since I know none of you care about mine: “… holiest mother of fucks, does it ever rule. It represents everything good about melodeath: stampeding riffs, exploding drums, expressive leads, scream-your-throat-bloody vocals, outsized production, and a hook that digs into your gut and doesn’t let go.” Sound good? Of course it does. Give it a spin since they have the whole album streaming and let us know if the wait was worth it.

Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018Of Feather and Bone
Bestial
Hymns of Perversion (Profound Lore) listen
On a playlist with Atomwinter, Knelt Rote and Necrot
Listen: Full Album Stream

Were you worried that all the music this week was going to be easy to listen to and accessible to the masses? Well fret not, metal hipster! Of Feather and Bone are some seriously grimey death metal that is almost as easy to listen to as Portal. Not quite, but almost. I’m serious though, this album is straight filth in death metal form so if you’re tired of death metal with good production quality, then look no further than these dudes right here. As of now, I can’t imagine myself ever playing this record again, but I’d love to see what these guys could do with some better recording equipment. But then again, maybe I’m just not br00tal enough and I’m completely missing the point.

Shit That Comes Out Today: March 23, 2018Throneless
Cycles (Black Bow)
On a playlist with Acid King, Goatsnake and Sleep
Listen: “Born In Vain”

I understand that some people like their music on the sludgey side, however, Throneless sound like someone dipped all of their instruments in cold molassess and then recorded the results on black metal’s proverbial potato. And to boot, the whole thing smelled so bad that the vocalist had to shout 50 ft away from the mic. I’m not even saying that insultingly, I’m saying that factually. Although I am certainly not a big fan of either doom or stoner metal, I am sure that there is a niche group out there who will absolutely love what might very well be the slowest album of 2018. PSA: I have conflicting reports of when this album actually comes out. Some say today, some say April. Considering I already wrote the feature, fuck it. It stays. If someone has the correct release date, let me know in the comments. Make sure it’s condescending and snarky though.
