Misfits to Once Again Employ Silly Anti-Phone Pouches at This Weekend’s New Jersey Show

Who’s going to see the Misfits’ play their first New Jersey-area show with Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only in thirty-five years this Saturday? Hoping to take a ton of phone pics and video at the gig? Well, you’re gonna hafta be crafty about it. The venue, Prudential Center, just sent out an e-mail to ticket holders informing them that they’ll be required to store their phones in those cellphone condoms for the duration of the gig:

“Upon arrival, all phones and smart watches will be secured in Yondr cases that will be unlocked at the end of the show. You’ll maintain possession of your phone throughout the event, and if needed, can access your phone at designated Yondr unlocking stations. Your phone will be re-locked in a Yondr case before you re-enter the performance.”

This isn’t a surprise — the band did the same thing at their Las Vegas show last year (presumably at the demand of the notoriously old and cranky Glenn Danzig, who hates smartphones even more than he hates doctors and Sinéad O’Connor). But I think some fans were likely hoping they’d soften their stance now — especially given a) the less-than-positive publicity the Las Vegas stunt attracted, and b) the fact that it didn’t even work anyway — plenty of photos and videos from the show got out.

Personally, I’m not that bothered by this — I’m kinda looking forward to a (mostly) phone-free show and I’m curious to see how this will actually work — but I still think it’s probably a colossal waste of energy and resources. I’ll report back Monday, with or without phone footage.
