Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018

LOLOLOLOL GUYS HOOBASTANK ARE RELEASING A NEW ALBUM TODAY. That is funnier than anything I have ever written. I was pretty sure they were just a one-hit wonder from the early 2000s but by god they have a career. Crazy, crazy shit right there. Anyway, this week isn’t hurting for new releases by any means so no matter your taste, you’re sure to find something that you like. Personally, however, I cannot wait until June week because there’s lots of Kansas City metal that I want to share with you all. But for now, check out all this new shit and find something to tide yourself over.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018Bleeding Through
Love Will Kill All (SharpTone Records)
On a playlist with Eighteen Visions, Throwdown and I Killed The Prom Queen
Listen: “Fade into the Ash”

I never listened to this band when they were popular, but fuck, Axl only gave this album a 1.5/5 in his review, with a caption that reads only, ‘Jesus Christ.’ Yikes. I’ve given some pretty harsh scores before — I’m looking at you, Dimmu Borgir and The Acacia Strain — but never a 1.5. So what went wrong? The album can best be summed up by this line of absolute gold from Mr. Rosenberg himself: “Goth fortune cookie wisdom.” In short, the whole album sounds like a seventh grader actually finished their first idea for record. There is absolutely nothing bad I could say about this that Axl hasn’t already, so go ahead and read his review here.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018Graveyard
Peace (N/A)
On a playlist with Witchcraft, Kadavar and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats
Listen: “Please Don’t”

Stoner rock/doom has never been something I have particularly cared for mostly for the reason outlined in the very first sentence of Emperor Rhombus’ review: it meanders. I don’t have the attention span for 7 minutes of slow riffs, two verses and a 5 minute outro. So I’ll just turn it over to Rhombus: “Peace ain’t a bad album, and it has a couple of songs that’ll get your motor running. But those standout tracks are divided up by semi-decent ones that diminish the record’s power just enough to make it good, not great.” There ya have it, folks. You can read the reast of the review here.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018Jonathan Davis
Black Labyrinth (Sumerian)
On a playlist with Korn, Korn and Korn again
Listen: “Basic Needs”

I can’t imagine that anyone who has ever listend to Korn before wouldn’t know what this is going to sound like. But in case you need me to explain it, it’s just watered-down, less dark Korn. Maybe radio rock Korn would be a better way to put it, even though most rock stations already play what relatively few Korn songs are radio appropriate. I have absolutely nothing exciting to say about this because again, we’ve been hearing Jonathan Davis write music for how fucking long now? Whatever, the dude knows his style and he knows what he’s good at. If you’ve kept on the Korn bandwagon, then you’ll probably like this but if not, then move along.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018Candlemass
House Of Doom EP (Napalm)
On a playlist with My Dying Bride, Therion and Agalloch
Listen: “House of Doom”

Although Candlemass might have said that they would be done releasing full-length albums after Psalms For The Dead back in 2012, the jokes on you because House OF Doom is an EP! You’d be hardpressed to find better music to murder vampires to because I can’t imagine that Van Helsing listens to anything other than this, and honestly, if he doesn’t have a gun that just shoots Candlemass CDs then consider me disappointed. While you all listen to this, I’m going to go tell some comic book companies that I have an idea for a horrible movie that wi- Oh look at that! DC already picked it up. Oh, and by the way, whatever the fuck Ghost’s lead singer is calling himself these days does guest vocals on the album version of the title track.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 25, 2018Whitechapel
This Is Exile (Vinyl) (Metal Blade)
On a playlist with old Suicide Silence, Molotov Solution and Carnifex
Listen: Full album

I am very aware of the fact that this album came out ten years ago, don’t worry. However, I feel the need to cover this reissue because This Is Exile is the best deathcore album ever written. You can kick, you can scream and you can punch in defiance, but I don’t care. You’re wrong. Without this album, deathcore wouldn’t have truly taken off as a subgenre. Although I had heard some music on the more extreme side before this, Exile was the first record of it’s type that truly hooked me. Whitechapel might not be my favorite band anymore, but this album is the reason I am here writing for MetalSucks and as I’m sure you all know, I write under the drunk version of their vocalist’s name. You can tell me that The Somatic Defilement was better, but you are wrong. You can tell me that Suicide Silence’s The Cleansing was a better album, but you are wrong. The fact is that even 10 years later, deathcore bands are still trying and failing to rip off what Whitechapel did on Exile. So if an album can single handedly thrust a genre into the spotlight and then have its copycats send it straight back into stale mediocrity, it’s safe to call it the best.
