DevilDriver Debut Cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky” Featuring Randy Blythe and John Carter Cash

DevilDriver have devildebuted another cut off Outlaws ‘Til the End: Vol. 1, their upcoming album of outlaw country covers (P.S. I’m still not clear about the difference between outlaw country and law abiding country). Specifically, they’ve released a cover of Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” which is one of those songs that’s so famous that you know it even if you don’t realize you know it. As is the case with all the covers on the album, they’ve metallicized the song. In this case, that does provide some unintended comedy: the phrase “Yippie yi ooh, yippie yi yay!” simply does not work in a death metal growl.

Still, the melody is so solid you can’t really mess this song up. Also it’s okay to like metal and to laugh at metal. Suck it up.

You can check out DevilDriver’s Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky” via the below music video. The track features guest appearances from Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), John Carter Cash (the reproductive organs of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash), and Ana Cristina (John Carter Cash’s wife). Outlaws ‘Til the End: Vol. 1 comes out July 6. Pre-order it here. Also, check out a list of DevilDriver frontman Dez Fafara’s Top Ten Outlaw Country Songs here. Yee-haw.
