Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018

This week fucking rocks. With only one shit release, the rest of the featured albums are all completely killer and I suspect that a lot of you will enjoy what’s coming out this week. That being said, my dudes in Existem are dropping the first single from their upcoming album Mantle today so for all of you who like prog, make sure you keep an eye out for that here on MS because Mantle is a killer album. Other than that, It’s been a busy week in the Boozeman wing of the MetalSucks Mansion. I have reviews for new albums from Between the Buried and Me as well as Chelsea Grin (ew) coming up, as well as a few video shoots with The Black Dahlia Murder and Shadow of Intent. July is gonna be a fun month, my friends. But for now, let these killer releases keep you busy.

Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018Bullet For My Valentine
Gravity (Spinefarm)
On a playlist with Trivium, Bring Me The Horizon and that lobotomy you’ve always wanted
Listen: “Letting You Go”

Don’t worry, this is the only band getting shit on this week, but what in the actual fuck happened to Bullet For My Valentine? Although I do have to admit that I liked a few of their songs back in the 14-year-old emo Boozeman phase, BFMV now just sound like a shitty pop rock band with a lead singer who manages to get more annoying with every album. Gravity is hilariously bad and has album artwork that I can only assume was color coordinated to match singer Matthew Tuck’s bowl of Froot Loops. So if you want a laugh, check this album out. Otherwise, you can read the rest of Jeff Treppel’s review here. PSA: MetalSucks cannot be held responsible for the irresistible urge to rip your own ears off that you will experience while listening to Gravity. Should you happen to do this, please mail them to Bullet For My Valentine so they stop making music.

Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018Shylmagoghnar
Transcience (Napalm Records)
On a playlist with Wintersun, Ensiferum and Norther
Listen: “Transience”

The first band I thought of when I listened to Shylmagoghnar were Wintersun, albeit a little bit slower and more ambient. Don’t let the hard-to-pronounce band name and long song lengths turn you off, this band is an absolute gem and based on the few songs I’ve heard so far, Transcience is shaping up to be one of the best albums of the year. As for the sound itself, as I said, they remind me a lot of a slightly less heavy version of Wintersun. The lyrical themes revolve around nature and the atmospheric elements of the music attest to that. Shylmagoghnar know how to perfectly throttle the tempo of their music up and down so well that if you weren’t able to see that the title track is 12 minutes long, you would probably never know. If you only listen to a single album this week, then make it this one.

Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018Night Verses
From The Gallery Of Sleep (Equal Vision Records)
On a playlist with Intervals, Animals As Leaders and Sithu Aye
Listen: “No. 0”

I have no idea what I was expecting from Night Verses, but it definitely wasn’t going to be me liking it as much as I did. For anyone familiar with Intervals or Animals As Leaders, this brand of instrumental-djent will meld perfectly with the rest of your playlists. However, this album doesn’t solely rely on the guitar to get it’s point across. There are plenty of ambient parts where the guitars take a back seat and just let the drums and soundbites take the wheel. From The Gallery Of Sleep is an incredibly easy listen and even if you don’t like djent, you owe it to yourself to give this album a shot. Chances are you’ll like it.

Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018Torn The Fuck Apart
A Genetic Predisposition To Violence (Gore House Productions)
On a playlist with Skinless, Ingested and Cannibal Corpse
Listen: “Invitation Homicide”

In case it weren’t immediately obvious, Torn The Fuck Apart do not fuck around. This band is absurdly brutal to the point where you could probably show a non-metalhead the album artwork for Mayhem’s Dawn of the Black Hearts and they’d still be less disturbed than they would be from listening to this band. So yeah, this is death metal that is not for the weak of heart and even the album artwork can attest to that. It’s a no-bullshit death metal release so if you’re not into any of the other shit that comes out today (lol), then Torn The Fuck apart are going to be right up there at the top of your list this week. Edit: These dudes are from Kansas City and I was somehow not aware of this. Guess I’ll be seeing these dudes at the Riot Room soon to get my ears fucked with a fist.

Shit That Comes Out Today: June 29, 2018The Antichrist Imperium
Volume II Every Tongue Shall Praise Satan (Apocalyptic Witchcraft Recordings)
On a playlist with Akercocke, Voices, and The Order of Apollyon
Listen: “The Dredful Hosanna”

How fucking awesome is the name The Antichrist Imperium? Really fucking awesome. The Antichrist Imperium are a blend of death metal and melodic black metal that is a rather unique listen. One minute you’re soaring through Scandanavia with the Northern winds at your back and the next minute, you’re smashing in the skulls of your enemies and eating their eyeballs. This band features former members of Akercocke and The Berzerker, although TAI are more in the vein of Ackercocke than anything else. And to boot, the song title “The Dreadful Hosanna” perfectly sums up my feelings about having to go to Sunday school as a kid and sing those stupid fucking songs about how great the church’s imaginary friend in the sky is. The ‘hosanna hosanna’ one was easily my least favorite so it’s nice to finally have a version that I can enjoy.
