Thrice’s New Song “Only Us” Sounds Like Only Thrice Indeed

Thrice are such a great fucking band. One of a kind. Fully unique. A national treasure that we’re lucky to have! I feel like I’ve let my appreciation for them slide over the years through sheer laziness, but that changes now: with their new album Palms, I hereby vow to give Thrice every bit of praise they deserve.

So far that hasn’t been difficult: “The Grey,” the first single from the album, was a bit of a throwback to the Artist in the Ambulance era while also incorporating some of the indie and post-rock influences that have come to define the band’s sound of late, while “Only Us,” which came out yesterday, finds the band rooted firmly in the present. A pulsating analogue synth provides the track’s backbone while Dustin Kensrue’s voice, with just a bit of strain, rests atop a fuzzed out guitar line that carries the tune in an almost Radiohead-like way. The synths are what make the difference here, though; I’ve always loved how this band continually moves forward, and this track is no exception.

Palms comes out September 14th via Epitaph; pre-order here.
