Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018

Boy oh boy is it an exciting time to be Phil Boozeman. After roughly a year-and-a-half at my current prison daytime occupation, I’ve finally reached the point where I get to turn my two weeks in get the fuck out of my cubicle. Nothing in this world feels better than quitting a job you’ve hated since you started working there. Absolutely nothing. Unfortunately for all you, it isn’t THIS job that I hate. The only part I hate about writing STCOT is all of you guys <3. On another note, will someone please marry One Mat Gang and help him raise our bastard son, Alex? I went to the store for some smokes about two months ago and it’ll probably be at least 18 years before I get back. Child support and emotional positivity not included. Thanks.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018Exocrine
Molten Giant (Unique Leader)
On a playlist with Soreption, The Zenith Passage and Lago
Listen: “Hayato”

Exocrine easily have the best release this week. “Hayato” begins with a Stranger Things style intro and quickly descends into melodic heaviness that’s technical enough to make you swoon, but not overly so to make you wonder who all those 123,089,873/7674 time signatures are for. I looked that up by the way. It’s the signature that the new Meshuggah/Portal super group will write a 13 hour concept album in. SERIOUSLY GUYS. Anyway, if you liked Soreption’s new album then you’re sure to love this. It’s a beautiful blend of technicality, riffing and heavy melodies that will make even the most stubborn of death metal fans bang their head.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018Rebel Wizard
Voluptuous Worship Of Rapture And Response (Prosthetic Records)
On a playlist with Eddie Van Halen tripping his nuts off with a guitar. That’s it.
Listen: “The poor and ridiculous alchemy of Christ and Lucifer and us all”

I have the feeling that Rebel Wizard took a song naming class taught by Nile because how the hell else do you come up with something like “The poor and ridiculous alchemy of Christ and Lucifer and us all”? And for the record, I didn’t forget to capitalize that. It’s how the band released it. ANYWAY, if guitars could cause acid trips, then Rebel Wizard would surely be the band to do it. That’s something I thought before I saw the music video for the featured track. If you just want to zone out and listen to some trippy, shredding guitars, then look no further.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018Carnation
Chapel Of Abhorrence
On a playlist with Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel and Obituary
Listen: “Chapel of Abhorrence”

If I had to describe this band in one sentence, it would be Cannibal Corpse with more tremolo picking. Although that’s really all I need to say about this band, unfortunately I have a whole paragraph to write. I know that practically any death metal band could be compared to Cannibal Corpse, but Carnation’s vocalist could easily be mistaken for Corpsegrinder and even I had to do a double take the first time I played the title track. In addition, the guitar tone sounds like it was copy/pasted from a chainsaw in the best kind of way. It’s chuggy, it’s crunchy and most of all, it makes me want to go on a rampage and possibly dismember all of my noisy ass fucking neighbors who think it’s cool to have asshole basketball practice at 2 am.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018Trappist
Ancient Brewing Tactics (Relapse)
On a playlist with Iron Reagan, Body Count and a hardcore version of Tankard
Listen: “No Corporate Beer”

This is punk, but let’s be real. There was absolutely no way I wasn’t going to cover an album called Ancient Brewing Tactics with a song called “No Corporate Beer”. There was just no way. The feature track here is beautiful and crusty just like you would want from your punk and features beautiful lines such as “If someone tries to hand me a Coors I’m gonna have to pass / If you pass me a Pabst Blue Ribbon, I’ll kick your hipster ass” and if that ain’t poetry then I don’t know what fucking is. Granted, I like Coors and PBR, but I’m also a human garbage disposal for alcohol so whatever. I laughed my ass off from what I heard off this album so it’s definitely a good listen if you want something edgy, but not metal.

Shit That Comes Out Today: August 17,2018The Five Hundred
Bleed Red (Long Branch)
On a playlist with Crystal Lake, Her Name In Blood and Coldrain
Listen: “Bleed Red”

WARNING: CONTAINS METALCORE. And believe or not, I’m actually not going to wipe my ass with this band. Although they’re mostly the same as any other metalcore band, they do one thing that sets them apart: vocal variety. It’s not just straight generic good cap/bad cop garbage, but rather the vocals alternate in between screams and cleans in the middle of verses. It feels like the singing here serves a musical purpose than just giving one of the guitar players something interesting to do during the chorus. And to boot, the cleans aren’t whiny and annoying. So good job, The Five Hundred. I’ve been with MetalSucks for 3.5 years now and you’re the first metalcore band I’ve ever said anything nice about. Someone please let them know.
