Listen to Avenged Sevenfold’s New Song “Mad Hatter”

Reddit and Twitter neckbeards with way too much time on their hands uncovered clues last week indicating that Avenged Sevenfold are planning to release an EP consisting of the four songs they’ve written for the Call of Duty video game franchise. The final one of those, “Mad Hatter,” written for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, is now out for your and everyone’s streaming pleasure.

I reckon my take on “Mad Hatter” will be drastically different than that of most of those in the metalsphere given my undying love for this band’s music contrasted with everyone else’s hatred. So, no surprise here, I like it a lot! I even dig it a whole lot more than most of the material the band’s put out of late, including their surprise-released 2016 album The Stage. It’s got a slower, plodding, heavy groove that feels like it would’ve fit right in on the band’s 2007 self-titled effort, some dynamic acoustic guitar work (long a hallmark of their sound) and a scorching Synyster Gates guitar solo. Above all, it’s particularly dark in a way that most of this band’s material isn’t. It’s a good ‘un.

Here’s to hoping A7X’s next record has more in this vein. Crank it below.
