Exclusive Track Premiere: “Wealth and Power” by Stonecutters

Few metal albums this year will have as appropriate a title as Carved in Time, the newest offering from Louisville, KY’s Stonecutters. The briefest description of their music would be deathrash in a similar vein to Skeletonwitch and Revocation, but that would also be an oversimplification. Carved in Time draws on influences from across the history of metal, from NWOBHM to classic thrash to death metal to sludge to hardcore to melodeath to… well, you get the idea. Stonecutters expertly synthesize the entirety of metal history into something new, something that’s at once totally destructive and crazy fun, like illegal firecrackers or silently passing gas at a fancy cocktail party.

But don’t just take our word for it — listen for yourself, as today MetalSucks proudly premieres the Timely track “Wealth and Power.”

Says the band of the song:

“’Wealth and Power’ is our second single off our upcoming album and dives deeper into the vibe of the record, which is a soundscape to our pondering of time and impermanence. The songs pummeling intro/verse guitar riff came naturally. The chicken picking minor second lick paired against the gallops creates an evil sound that inspired the dystopian lyrics.

“The opening line ‘Extraordinary suffering from the womb’ is an honest expression of how I feel about life. You suffer then you die. There is no divine purpose to your life. The song’s hook ‘What is Inherit? / What is Learned?’ asks us to look inside ourselves and to contemplate ‘Why are we like this?’ Is it inherited or is it a learned behavior?

“The solo section to this song was inspired by the duel guitar work of Thin Lizzy and Maiden. We are always jamming their tunes in the van and it bleeds into our songwriting.”

Turn your speakers up to their maximum volume and blast “Wealth and Power” below! Carved in Time comes out November 2 via GrindEthos Records, and can be pre-ordered here. The band goes on tour the day before the album’s release; get dates at the bottom of this post!
