Periphery Frontman Spencer Sotelo Has a New Side Project Called Nik Mystery

0

My favorite Periphery release of recent vintage was their 2014 Clear EP, on which every member composed one song. It was an honest representation of each member’s musical headspace at the time rather than a Periphery album, and that made it especially endearing. Vocalist Spencer Sotelo’s entry on that EP, “The Parade of Ashes,” was on the poppier side of things, although still heavy.

Since then he’s dabbled in electronic music with his side project Endur, and now most recently he’s taken a turn towards even more poppy pastures with Nik Mystery, a new collaboration with guitarist Mike Dawes and producer/musician Jukka Backlund. Nik Mystery just released their debut single “Now,” and man, it’s a banger! It’s stylized and written like an ’80s pop anthem — think Springsteen, Mellencamp, Don Henley, etc. — but it’s got modern production that sounds current and fresh. It’s not unlike anything Jack Antonoff has his hands in; it’s got that big, anthemic throwback vibe. Oh, and did I mention it’s great? It’s fucking great. It’s catchy as fuck!

Check out “Now” below. Nik Mystery’s debut EP When comes out on December 14th. Follow Nik Mystery on Facebook.
