Rammstein Guitarist: “I Don’t Want to be Another KISS.”

With regards to the notoriety Rammstein receive for their absolutely bananas live shows, guitarist Richard Kruspe told Heavy Consequence “I don’t want to be another KISS, where people talk about makeup and stuff like that and no one talks about the music.”

Too late. Sorry, Richard!

Rammstein have some jams, to be sure. Most everyone knows “Du Hast” and I’m willing to bet could hum along to a handful of other tracks from their catalogue. But so do Kiss: “Detroit Rock City,” “Rock and Roll All Night,” and… well, a handful pretty much anyone off the street could probably hum along to given the chance.

Both bands, though, will primarily always be known for their live shows. That’s just what it is. I don’t begrudge Kruspe the desire to push forward and make new music, and hopefully we’ll get at least one solid new anthem out of it — Liebe ist für alle da (2009) gave us the irresistible “Pussy” — but it will always be about the live show for Rammstein, pyro, fire, lights, acrobatics, giant prosthetic dicks and all.

That’s not a bad thing. It’s one of the best live shows on earth!

Oh… Kruspe also said that Rammstein’s next album will “probably” be out in April 2019.

Here’s the full quote:

“Everything with Rammstein takes forever, because there are six people, plus an engineer and a producer, and we all have opinions about it. It’s just going very slow, and it’s very time-consuming and sometimes frustrating.

“Eventually, I think it’s going to be an album that has a certain kind of potential that Rammstein hasn’t achieved yet.

“For me, one of the reasons to step back into making records with Rammstein was to balance the popularity of the band as a live act with the actual music. With Rammstein, people tend to talk about the fire and all the live stuff.

“I thought, ‘I don’t want to be another KISS,’ where people talk about makeup and stuff like that and no one talks about the music.”

Rammstein have a series of upcoming stadium shows booked in Europe; dates here.
