For Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo’s latest “Doodle” — the nightly jam sesh between the Metallica guitarist and bassist — the duo chose to pander to a Birmingham, Alabama crowd by covering Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” (complete with James Hetfield on vocals — the frontman, like drummer Lars Ulrich, usually sits out this portion of the show). In the musicians’ defense, the crowd ate it up. Do they do this in every town? The next time I go see them, am I gonna hafta watch Kirk and Rob play “Empire State of Mind” or some shit?

ANYWAY, they also covered “Iron Man” by Black Sabbath. There’s no evidence they did so to pander to any iron men in the audience.
