A metalhead’s t-shirt collection contains some of their most prized possessions. Sweaty, stained and torn, our shirts are chronicles of our lives, physical markers of a past time and place that we pridefully put on our bodies every day. They have a clear pecking order: there are those shirts you wear only when all the best ones are in the laundry, there are the absolute favorites you wear once every couple of weeks, and there are all the shirts in between, each with their own clear rank. To a metalhead, T-shirts are EVERYTHING.

Conjurer guitarist Brady Deeprose is the latest to share his most prized threads for our series My Metal T-Shirt Collection. The U.K.-based post-metal/doom outfit released their critically acclaimed album Mire last year (stream below) and they’re currently out on tour with Rivers of Nihil, their first-ever visit stateside. For an extra twist for this entry of My Metal T-Shirt Collection, Brady compiled his list in the order he acquired each piece, so let’s all take a journey through his musical development together.

The Darkness

This is the first band shirt I ever got at my first ever gig experience and it’s bootleg as fuck. My dad woke me up one day and handed this to me and told me to pack a bag as we were going to Paris to see my favorite band in the world. My dad is a legend! It was a great show too and really kicked off my love for live music (which being in a band subsequently killed stone-dead).

The Black Dahlia Murder

This is the first bit of merch I remember seeing in a shop that I thought was so cool I simply had to buy it, even though I didn’t really know the band very much. I got way more into The Black Dahlia Murder afterwards, so it worked out. Bonus points for a closeup of the werewolf nipple. Bonus bonus points for picture of (possibly 15?)-year old me and TBDM drummer Shannon Lucas before their show in Sheffield that my dad drove me to. \m/

Turbowolf

A fairly regular gig shirt — I adore this band. Their first record is one of my favorites of all time and kick-started this intensely recognizable art direction that ran through all aspects of the first album cycle. This is one of those shirts that bears no resemblance to the music or lyrics yet manages to match the aesthetic perfectly.

Yob

This is a shirt that I dig most of all for the occasion that I got it. Dan [Nightingale, vocals] and I went to see Yob at The Underworld and it was such a massively inspirational moment for us, before we started gigging, that it really spurred us on to make Conjurer “a thing.” Yob fucking rule.

Regarde Les Hommes Tomber

This is a band Dan found out about at Hellfest years ago, and I have this absolutely glorious photo of him losing his shit wearing it at said festival. He will be VERY pleased I’ve shared this. The band themselves are a fucking phenomenal blend of black and post metal, with a super intense live show and aesthetic. We were lucky enough to tour with them a few years back and I picked up this and most of their other merch. This is one of my all-time favorite designs though – the detail and artistry are on a whole other level.

This is my favorite shirt to gig in. I’m a real sucker for gold on black and there’s just something about the composition of this design that I’ve fallen in love with. I think it’s in the wash now so have a picture of the mockup and a cropped shot of me wearing the real thing – I’ll let your imagination combine the two. OHHMS are our label mates and a huge influence on what we do, always presenting something new, unexpected and challenging.

Sunn O)))

I always think it’s cool when bands have one-off merch for special events and none more so than Sunn. It’s really the biggest hustle in the game and I respect them even more for it. I’m the sucker that went for it though – my girlfriend and I saw them at The Barbican in London and it was just immense. I’ve dug this out now tat I’ve lost a bit of weight and it fits. Bonus.

Dead Hands

This is the most insane piece of merch I own and I love it. Shoutout to those crazy cats in Dead Hands.

Underdark

I actually got this pretty recently – Underdark are a class local midlands-based black metal band that have been a real hype name on the underground scene for awhile, none of which actually bears any weight on my purchase decision. These guys had a new, very silly logo designed and then had the absolutely gargantuan cojones to not only put a big one on the front, but slap it down both arms too. The utter cheek of it. I had to part with cash. Nonsense.

Cardi B

Apparently I’m not allowed to mention that I listen to stuff other than metal — which is weird, especially as that’s about 70% of my listening — because it’s not “what the people what to hear,” but fuck it. Invasion Of Privacy was my AOTY last year because I love trap bangers. I just think this is great, her music is great and people who have a problem with that are close-minded — that’s a really boring place to be.
