Babymetal Release New Song “Elevator Girl”

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around “Elevator Girl,” the latest single from Babymetal (now with 33.3% less baby!). It’s not that the song lacks any of the elements which made us fans in the first place; it’s every bit the busy J-pop/metal/way too many energy drinks hybrid that made us fans in the first place.

Rather, it’s the lyrics that are throwing me: “Hey lady are you going up?/ Dow-dow-dow-dow-dow-down?/ No matter what you say or what you do you’re going dow-dow-dow-dow-dow-down.” So this is the first-ever metal song about a mentally unstable elevator operator (or “lift attendant,” if you’re being formal)? That’s… interesting. I wonder if the ladies in Babymetal needed someone to explain to them what an elevator operator even is. Will their younger fans know? I don’t think I’ve even encountered an elevator operator since the ’90s, and I’m a fancy-pants dandy who frequents the kinds of places that would have employed such a person back in the day, lest us regular folk be confused about how to pull a lever when we reach the appropriate floor.

I guess what I’m saying is: “Elevator Girl” is unusual, which is saying something coming from a group of choreographed adolescents in coordinated outfits.

Check out “Elevator Girl” below. The track will presumably appear on Babymetal’s new album, which should be out later this year. In the meantime, they’ve been performing the track live for a minute now (video below the studio recording below), and will presumably continue to do so during their upcoming live performances.
