Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019

What does Corey Taylor think of this week’s new releases? Better question, what does he think of the GoT finale?! Something something culturally relevant… okay, anyways…

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019Fleshgod Apocalypse
Veleno (NB)
Listen “Sugar”

I digress, I’ve never really been in to this band. So unfortunately (or fortunately?), I can’t really offer any meaningful discussion on how Veleno differs from Fleshgod Apocalypse’s other albums. However, I can provide some commentary on the music video I linked above. While images of hookers shooting up heroin is a tried-and-true formula for shock value, what really caught my attention was the artistic application of  vomit. Straight up rainbow puke. Sometimes it’s projectile, sometimes it’s a nice, satisfying gush, sometimes it’s chunky, and at least once, it gets licked back up again. Goddamn, what a time to be alive!

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019 Esoctrilihum
The Telluric Ashes of the Ö Vrth Immemorial Gods (I, Voidhanger)
Listen “Kros Ö Vrth

I, Voidhanger has several intriguing releases set for today (which are conveniently listed in the “Other Shit”  section), but the latest from Esoctrilihum was the obvious choice for me. This mysterious one-man project from France snagged the #3 spot on my 2018 year end list with the Lovecraftian mindfuck Inhüma, and now Asthâgul (the man behind the curtain) has outdone himself again with his fourth full-length in two years, Telluric Ashes. Does this guy ever sleep? I mean, I wouldn’t, if I experienced the kind of twisted nightmares his music implies. Telluric Ashes is Esoctrilihum’s most experimental work yet, while at the same time feeling incredibly focused, like Mr. Asthâgul’s really starting to find his groove. Anyone who likes their music pulled straight from the cosmic crypts better be making this one a priority.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019Earth
Full Upon Her Burning Lips (Sargent House)
Listen “The Colour of Poison

“I wanted this to be a ‘sexy’ record, a record acknowledging the ‘witchy’ and ‘sensual’ aspects in the music,” says Dylan Carlson about Earth’s new album. “Sort of a ‘witch’s garden’ kind of theme, with references to mind altering plants and animals that people have always held superstitious beliefs towards. A conjuror or root doctor’s herbarium of songs, as it were.” Take that statement for whatever it’s worth to you, and listen to Full Upon Her Burning Lips with an open mind. Some staunch fans may find the record a bit stale in development, while other listeners will appreciate its simplicity and return to some of the band’s previous ideas.

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019Visigoth
Bells of Awakening (Metal Blade)
Listen “Fireseeker”

Dark Souls themed metal always gets two thumbs up from me. Then again, the only other band I’m aware of that’s done it is Tomb Mold… though I’m certain there’s more out there. Visigoth’s Bells of Awakening brings us geeky DS lore worship with the epic-ness and shreddery of classic heavy metal — honestly, I can’t think of a better power couple. And as if that wasn’t enough of a nerdgasm, just wait till you find out that some of the lyrics are pulled straight from the game itself! If only I could be so grossly incandescent…

Shit That Comes Out Today: May 24th, 2019Nocturnus AD
Paradox (Profound Lore)
Listen “Precession Of The Equinoxes

Are you one of the many struggling progressive death fans who’ve been personally affected by Nocturnus’ demise? Weep no more! Founder Mike Browning (also ex-Morbid Angel) has resurrected the band as Nocturnus AD, picking up both musically and thematically where The Key left off over 20 years ago.  Their “debut”, Paradox, is more of a kooky blast-to-the-past than it is anything revolutionary — I’m not sure if any of the members realize that zillions of new synth patches have been developed since the ’90s. Still, the record is a ton of fucking fun with or without any attention to the underlying concept. Jam it, and jam it LOUD.
