LADY, LOOK OUT! THOSE BUTTERFLIES LOOK PISSED!!!

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010 at 12:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

I’d never heard of Infinite Tales before I saw their new video, “Amoxicillin… Extermination,” on SMN, but consider me smitten. The band’s music is as generic as can be, and my first thought upon hearing the song was “Are these cats somehow unaware that this kind of metalcore is now so last decade?” But then I realized they’re Ukranian.

I’ve never been to the Ukraine so maybe this is just the whiskey talking, but I think it’s one of those places they have in Eastern Europe where they get everything, like, way late. Like when I was in Prague in 2003, and Meantime was still all the rage. I bet in this band’s hometown of Kiev, they’re considered ahead of their time.

Also, look at some of their band photos. I mean, this is just friggin’ adorable:

MASH-UP MANIA CONTINUES: REZNOR VERSUS FIDEE

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 at 11:30am by Axl Rosenberg

Yes. Yes, I do feel guilty for enjoying this.

But still.

Anyone remember when Trent Reznor and Dr. Dre were talking about doing an album together? Think that this is what it would have sounded like, or am I not giving Dre enough credit? This is how out of the loop I am on modern hip-hop. I haven’t bought a rap CD since Ice Cube’s The Predator. And I just wrote “rap CD.”

Who my caucasian?

Thanks to Voltron Futura for the tip.

CONFESSION: I KIND OF LIKE POWERMAN 5000

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 at 1:00pm by Vince Neilstein

powerman 5000Not in the “OMG PM5K rulez!!!” kind of way; in fact, I don’t own and haven’t even heard any of their full albums. But in the “when the song comes on the radio I don’t change it, and I kind of enjoy it” type of way. In fact, just yesterday their early-oughts hit “Free” came on in my iTunes, and I quite enjoyed it. And their new track “Super Villain,” available on their MySpace page, is full of just the same kind of straight-ahead industrial rock goodness. Nothing new, high-brow or experimental here; it’s just fun. If you’re a Rob Zombie fan there’s no reason you shouldn’t enjoy these dudes, family relations aside.

The rap in the middle of the song is inexcusable. Inexcusable. But we’ll just have to excuse that for now. “Super Villain” comes from an in-the-works album with a release date and name TBA.

GUILTY PLEASURE PLAYLIST #2: CHRISTIAN METAL EDITION

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007 at 3:45pm by Axl Rosenberg

Multiple choice question: what do the following music videos all have in common? Is it:

a) They’re all both totally trendy and completely generic.

b) They’re all for songs that found their way onto my iPod after lots and lots of illegal substances ingested during TiVo’d episodes of Headbanger’s Ball made them seem like frickin’ masterpieces.

c) They’re all by Christian metal bands.

d) All of the above.

If you guessed “d,” you win… nothing. But if you want to see the videos to which I refer, click through the jump. Then feel free to rip into me like Demon Hunter’s drummer rips into a bag of Funyuns.

We all have ‘em: songs or sometimes entire albums that we know we shouldn’t like, but… we just can’t help ourselves. To that end, we present our new column Guilty Pleasure Playlists, in which we readily admit: we really should know better.
