NEW DEP ON 23/03

Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 2:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Okay, so I Europeanized the date abbreviation for the sake of a catchier headline. Whatevs. The point remains the same: The Dillinger Escape Plan’s new album, Option Paralysis, now has an official release date: March 23, 2010 on Season of Mist (actually the band’s own Party Smasher via Season of Mist, not that there’s any reason you should care about the distinction).

This is another one of those stories where’s there’s not much else to say other than what I’ve already said. Based on the comments I’ve read on this site in the past, most of you seem to already have fully-formed opinions on DEP. Vince and I are stoked to hear this album, especially since it follows the sheer awesomeness that was Ire Works. But we haven’t heard any new music yet, so… y’know. We have to wait and see what happens.

And on that note, I leave you with this:

I STILL LIKE HIM

Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 10:00am by Axl Rosenberg

I somehow completely missed that there’s a new HIM album coming out next year; I mean, we were due, so I’m not surprised, I just never heard about it ’til just now. It’s called Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice, which is long and silly and spooky and “deep,” y’know, in case you didn’t know they were goth.

Of course, that does negate the fact that it may very well be good, as many HIM albums are quite good. That shit is catchy as hell, and besides, Howard Jones likes it, and Howard Jones is much, much bigger than you are.

Metal Hammer already have a track-by-track guide to the album. It sounds like it’s gonna be a HIM album – either that makes you happy or it doesn’t.

Here’s one good reason I like HIM, and I don’t even care if you make fun of me, ’cause the solo makes me air guitar every time I hear it:

And this, my friends, might be the only example of a metal cover of a pop song that I’ve ever actually liked:

START YOUR WEEK WITH AN INJECTION OF SOULFLY

Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 9:00am by Axl Rosenberg

Max Cavalera and Soulfly are back in the studio, working on their seventh (shit, time flies!) album, tentatively titled Omen, and those cool motherfuckers at Metal Injection got Mr. Cavalera himself to do an in-studio video update. Check it out:

Not to be disrespectful to Max Cavalera or nothing, but while you happen to be in a studio with Logan Mader, do you think you could give your brother a call and get crackin’ on a new Cavalera Conspiracy album, too? I’d be much obliged if ya did.

MASTODON HAVE NO RESPECT FOR KWANZAA

Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 12:30pm by Vince Neilstein

mastodon holiday shippingSo I’m reading all about the “Royal Edition” of Mastodon’s Crack the Skye that’s coming out just in time for the holidays, and the above graphic from their website took me by surprise. Shipping deadlines not just for Christmas, but for Hanukkah! How considerate of those fine, southern gentlemen. I guess they want our Jew money, too.

About that Royal Edition, it’s pretty much just a repackaging of Crack the Skye with gold foil artwork and a “full-length Crack the Skye score.” I can’t find a description anywhere of what the hell that score actually is, but I’m guessing it’s the visual accompaniment the band’s been projecting on a screen behind them during their live shows. While I love Mastodon and I love Crack the Skye, I can’t see myself laying down $40 for an album I already have… and neither should you, considering there’s another awesome release coming out that same day that’s only going to cost $5!

ORPHANED LAND: GET READY FOR SOME HOT JEW ON JEW ACTION

Thursday, November 12th, 2009 at 3:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Israel’s Orphaned Land have just announced a February 9 release date for their new album, The Never Ending Way Of ORwarriOR, and, yes, we’re going to try and do one of those excellent Jew on Jew interviews that we sometimes do with a member of the band. But while those pieces usually tend to lean towards the, um, let’s say “sillier” aspects of Judaism, I have a feeling that the members of Orphaned Land might have something headier on their minds. I mean, check out what vocalist Kobi Farhi has to say about the album’s themes:

DAVE GROHL, CHRIS CORNELL TO HELP SLASH MOUTH RAPE HIS LEGACY

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 at 10:30am by Axl Rosenberg

slashfuckyouThe Starbucks Incident

Yes, I am going to continue to bitch about Slash. I understand that Slash is not Jimi Hendrix but this might be the single biggest betrayal to my formative years since Metallica released everything they’ve released from Load on, and I need to mourn.

So. Some lady says that the following singers are all on Slash’s new solo album, How Could Taking My Cues from Carlos Santana Possibly Go Wrong? I have added my own thoughts because that’s what we do around here. Click to read more…

THE OCEAN FIND A NEW SINGER AND ANNOUNCE THEY’LL BE RELEASING TWO ALBUMS IN 2010!

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at 2:00pm by Vince Neilstein

the oceanThe MetalSucks proverbial wet-dreams of early ‘08 (we have a lot of ‘em) — aka The Ocean, aka The Ocean Collective, aka Robin Staps, aka NOT this horrible band or this even horribler band — have posted an update on their MySpace page [sent to us by MS reader "grobi wunder"] announcing they’ve found a new vocalist. As we reported a month ago, The Ocean have been in the studio working on a new album; but as it turns out, they’re actually working on TWO albums, a suitable move after 2007’s two-disc ball-buster Precambrian:

“Ladies and Gentleman,

after many weeks in the dark, THE OCEAN have finally found a new vocalist.
“We are happy to announce Mr. Loïc Rossetti as tour new vocalist. “We are looking forward to weeks and months of intense touring in the future and a new era in the story of our lives!”, comments Robin Staps.

“Having Loïc in the band enables me to do what I’ve always been wanting to do with this band. His voice is strong and expressive and his variety of tone and the ease with which he switches between different vocal styles really amazing. There are no limits anymore. His screams are devastating, but his most valuable quality is his singing voice, which we will employ much more on the upcoming album”.

Read the rest of the news post, including info about the TWO new albums (to be released separately, not together as Precambrian was), after the jump.

READER-SUGGESTED CHICK METAL, PART 1: LUDICRA

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at 12:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

ludicra

Last week I solicited suggestions for awesome bands with female members that we don’t routinely write about here at MS, and a bunch of you obliged. So now I’m gonna try and actually listen to some of these bands over the next few days.

Ludicra was the very first band suggested, but the reader known as “lo;” Arthur von Nagel of Cormorant and sometimes MetalSucks and then Ziltoid chimed in with their seal of approval, too. Then last night the band came up again when we got a press release announcing that Ludicra are “putting the finishing touches” on their fourth full-length album, The Tenant, which will be out on Profound Lore in March 2010.

So, yeah. Let’s start with Ludicra.

METALSUCKS TO RELEASE THE BINARY CODE’S SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF

Monday, November 9th, 2009 at 5:00pm by MetalSucks

THEBINARYCODEhighresSMJPG

Our number one priority here at MetalSucks is to mercilessly rip into bands we think are terrible, even when they don’t necessarily deserve to be teased. But a very close second priority is to promote bands we think are awesome. And sometimes, those bands aren’t signed (yet).

Once such band is The Binary Code. If you’ve read this site for awhile, you know we have a lotta love for New Jersey’s premiere unsigned genre-benders. You also know that sometimes we get ambitious, and decide to, say, do an industry poll to see which albums have been the most popular this century, or have everyone who writes for the site review the new Metallica album on the same day, or actually get a review up when we say we will.

And thus, feeling ambitious about trying to promote an unsigned band we love, we had a crazy idea: let’s do a digital-only release on MetalSucks for Suspension of Disbelief, the new album from The Binary Code. And so, on December 15, we are going to do just that.

Now, let’s be clear: we’re not trying to be a record label, and we have no illusions of getting rich off this release – in fact, it’s entirely possible that this will be the first and last time we try something like this. But The Binary Code are a band we really love and believe in, and we’d heard some rough mixes of the album and really thought that the music was something special. And so we decided to try and help put new music out there in the world for once, instead of just being professional appreciators (or detractors, as is so often the case). We’re in that rare position where we can try to get TBC’s music to the public, and so we’re going to do just that.

So mark December 15 in your calendars. Suspension of Disbelief is a kick-ass album, and we’re thrilled to be involved. We hope you dig it as much as we do.

(HIGH ON) FIRE VERSUS FROST (HAMMER)

Thursday, November 5th, 2009 at 4:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

I’m not entirely sure what a “frost hammer” is – it sounds like the name of a band I wouldn’t like, actually – but it’s apparently the title of a new High on Fire song. You can watch bootleg footage of it being played live below, courtesy Blabbermouth.

Meanwhile, Snakes for the Divine has been announced as the tentative title of HOF’s new album, which will be out on E1 next year. Greg Fidelman, who produced the new Slayer album and worked on Metallica’s Death Mehgnetic, is producing. HOF are doing that whole Dethklok/Mastodon tour right now – if you’ve yet to see Matt Pike shake his flabby shirtless body, definitely go check it out.

METAL BLADE’S LATEST SIGN IS A REAL BARN BURNER

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 4:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

Any band whose MySpace page claims they hail from “Bongtreal, Canada” is immediately going to be on my good side – and if the music is actually decent, hey!, then I’ll do one of these here stoopid blog posts about ‘em.

And such is the case with Barn Burner, who just signed to Metal Blade. The press release announcing the coupling describes the band as “the 3 headed love child of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy and Fu Manchu,” but it’s much simpler to say simply that this is fuzzy, classic stoner rock in the vein of Baroness or Blood Mountain-era Mastodon.

Anyways, I’m digging what I’ve heard of this band so far. I guess we’ll see how Bangers, their Metal Blade debut, is when it’s released in early 2010. In the meantime, here’s a video of the band that they have posted on the aforementioned ; it looks like they’re fun live, doesn’t it?

A SNEAK PEAK OF THE NEW SEASON OF METALOCALYPSE

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 12:00pm by Vince Neilstein

When we interviewed Metalocalypse creator / Dethklok frontman Brendon Small on behalf of our readers last month, he told us that members of Mastodon, members of In Flames, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash and others would all be doing voice-over work on the coming season of Metalocalypse. This alone gives reason to be excited about the new season if for some reason you wouldn’t be psyched about it anyway. Now we’ve finally got a sneak peak of one of the episodes, sent in by MS reader Christopher Silverio… and, no surprise, it’s funny. Season 3 begins November 8th!

FUCK TO THE YES: THE ABSENCE GOING INTO THE STUDIO

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 4:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

The Absence may very well be one of the best American melodeath bands out there, and they just do not get enough love. Seriously, their guitar solos alone make me wanna cum so hard my nuts fly out of my dick. They’ve released two killer albums, From Your Grave and Riders of the Plague, on Metal Blade, and since Plague came out two years ago, I was hoping we’d get another one in ‘09. And while there’s obviously been no such luck…

…it does look like 2010 will bring us some new material. Says Blabbermouth:

Tampa, Florida melodic thrash outfit THE ABSENCE will enter Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida on Monday, November 2 to begin recording its third album for an early 2010 release via Metal Blade Records. Guitarist Patrick Pintavalle states, “We will be tracking with Brian Elliot and mixing duties will be handled by Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY, CARNAL FORGE).

Kjellgren produced and also mixed Plague, so I guess the band found that collaboration as fruitful as us listeners did. Everyone should be really, really stoked to hear this new album.

Here’s the video for “Dead and Gone” from Riders of the Plague. If you dig it – and you should – I implore you to check out the full record.

NACHTMYSTIUM’S BLACK MEDDLE, PT. II FINALLY IN THE WORKS

Monday, October 26th, 2009 at 3:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

nachtonthetownNachtmystium’s Black Meddle, Pt. 1 was one of the best albums of 2008, ending up at the top or near the top of most MS staffers’ top ten lists that year. So, naturally, Nachtmystium fans everywhere have been asking the question, “Hey, where the fuck is Black Meddle, Pt. II?”

Well, hey, guess what? The band has issued an update to that very query on their MySpace page:

NEW DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN WEBISODE: VOCALS WITH GREG PUCIATO AND… JAMES HETFIELD?!?

Monday, October 19th, 2009 at 3:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Here’s The Dillinger Escape Plan’s fifth webisode chronicling the making of their forthcoming album, Option Paralysis. And sorry if I got your hopes but, no, James Hetfield (Hatfield?) is not actually on the album. Just watch, it’ll all make sense.

The best part of watching these remains the all-too-brief teases of new music the band keeps feeding us. But everything we’ve heard thus far seems to be in the vein of classic, Calculating Infinity-style DEP mathcore, and while there’s nothing wrong with that at all, I am starting to wonder if there’s going to be any Ire Works-style Faith No More pop. I’d love for the band to continue to strike a balance between the two styles (as they did on Ire and, to a lesser extent, Miss Machine), but… who knows. I’m obviously speculating based on next to no concrete information, so… “Dead as History” fans shouldn’t lose sleep just yet.
