Mastodon’s Leviathan Celebrates its Bar Mitzvah

On August 31, 2004, Relapse Records released Leviathan, the neo-classic which launched Mastodon from the underground into the spotlight. And so, today, Leviathan is a man. Mazel tov!

In the opinion of many fans — this one included — Leviathan remains Mastodon’s strongest album to date. Remarkably, the album has aged incredibly well; it doesn’t feel like part of a trend from one particular scene or era (as opposed to, say, whatever Diecast and Still Remains released around that time). It’s robust, it’s intricate, and it makes an impression from the moment the very first chords of “Blood and Thunder” kick shit off. I’d like to think Herman Melville would approve.
