CINEMETAL ROUND-UP: NEW VIDEOS FROM IN FLAMES, JOHN 5, BARN BURNER, VALLENFYRE, AND BLOTTED SCIENCE

Monday, October 31st, 2011 at 10:30am by

I’m going to put about as much effort into this introduction as Clown from Slipknot puts into making sense in interviews.

We begin today with Barn Burner’s new NSFW video, for the song “Scum of the Earth.” Barn Burner played at our CMJ showcase a couple of weeks ago and they absolutely SLAYED — in fact, it was my first time seeing them live, and they were so good that I am now a 100% bigger Barn Burner fan than I already was. And I think this is video is pretty good… not, like, the greatest thing ever made or whatever, but it’s fun and it conveys the energy of the song. Unfortunately, some people are really offended by it, apparently because they are strongly opposed to the way that condiments were haphazardly utilized in order to film the video. I mean, there are  starving children in Africa who, like, don’t even have any maple syrup or ketchup or mustard, and guitarist/vocalist K. Keaglesmith just let some girl pour it all over him? What a wasteful dick!

A GOOD OLD FASHIONED BOOTLEG OF KVELERTAK AT OUR CMJ SHOWCASE

Thursday, October 27th, 2011 at 12:30pm by

Earlier this week, you got to check out some sweet live footage of the three support bands (Barn Burner, Turbid North, and Battlecross) from the CMJ showcase we did with Metal Injection and 1000 Knives last Friday night; the MI Junkies tell me they’ll have even sweeter footage of co-headliners Skeletonwitch and Kvelertak sometime in the not-too-distant future. And while you wait for that, we have a good, old-fashioned, not-at-all-glossy audio bootleg of the event from Mr. 1000 Knives himself, Rich Hall. I don’t think I even realized they played for damn near an hour until I saw the running time on this baby. Wow. It honestly felt like ten minutes. I mean, I could have watched them again almost right away. In fact, we did watch them again almost right away — they played at the nearby St. Vitus just a few hours later, and, yes, we did go to see them for the second time that night. Metal Injection has some footage of that gig, including a BRAND NEW SONG!!!, here.

Alas, we don’t have audio of Skeletonwitch, but I promise, they absolutely murdered the joint, too, and if they’d been playing again a few hours later, we surely would have spiked our booze with coffee and gone to see them, too. Lucky for all you cats, the MetalSucks-presented Skeletonwitch/Kvelertak headlining tour is still ongoing, so you, too, can snap your neck rocking out to both bands! Get remaining dates here. Support comes from Zoroaster.

And now, enjoy some livelertak…

BOOGIE DOWN WITH LIVE VIDEO OF BARN BURNER, TURBID NORTH AND BATTLECROSS FROM OUR CMJ SHOWCASE

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

There’s a major dance party happening right now in the Vince Division of the MetalSucks Mansion! Yeah, it’s cool and all that Metal Injection posted video of the three opening bands from this past Friday’s CMJ showcase, but those motherfuckers interrupted the electro dance grooves of the brand new Justice album. Assholes. I know Rob knows what’s I’m talkin’ about — dude showed off his sick dance moves at the Chromeo jam this past SXSW!

The MetalSucks / Metal Injection / 1000 Knives CMJ Showcase was a fucking blast, though: I headbanged so furiously during Skeletonwitch’s scorching set that I still have a bangover four days later, and I actually stepped up into the pit for Kvelertak, whose riffs are absolutely irresistible. Barn Burner, Turbid North and Battlecross rounded out the ridiculously good bill, and all three bands absolutely killed it. Today we’ve got multi-camera footage of all three, courtesy of Metal Injection. Check out Barn Burner below, and Turbid North and Battlecross after the jump.

METAL BLADE RECORDS IN 2010: STILL KILLING IT

Monday, July 12th, 2010 at 4:30pm by

metal blade records logo

Is it just me or is Metal Blade Records on something of a win streak lately with their young band signings? While certain labels to remain nameless seem to be venturing into either mainstreamy/emoy metalcore or seem content to sign the same old same old or hedge their bets all on one sub-genre, Metal Blade’s young band roster is extremely diversified and remarkably clunker free. Let’s take a look at the band’s they’ve signed in the past couple of years:

  • Aeternam: Classic American death metal mixed with a more melodic, epic, and Euro — but decidedly dark — sense of melody. Check out the song “The Coronation of Seth” on their MySpace page — pure win.
  • Allegaeon: Technical melodic death metal that our own Sammy O’Hagar seemed to like and that our own Bob Cock seems to LOVE.
  • Bison B.C.: My favorite of the Mastodon-inspired psych/stoner/crust metal masses with a good bit of originality. Incredibly fun to watch live.
  • Istapp: Frosty Immortal-style black metal that indulges in every cliche in the book (in a good way) and isn’t mired in shit production.
  • Barn Burner: Up-beat, throwback stoner metal ala The Sword that’s got some real soul and actual musicality.
  • Fleshwrought: Johnny Davy’s and Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity, Animals as Leaders) new tech-death project. Quality!

COREY’S JANUARY 2010 BLEEDERS’ DIGEST

Monday, February 1st, 2010 at 11:49am by

Last year, I got way too busy with this thing called life and ignored this other thing called metal. As a result, I missed out on a lot of quality music as was evidenced by my paltry contribution to the year-end MetalSucks Best Of 2009 lists.

I am here to rectify the error of my ways, month by month.

Here are the January 2010 releases that got under my skin, burrowed their way into my brain, made my ears bleed, or simply tickled my unmentionables:

METAL BLADE’S LATEST SIGN IS A REAL BARN BURNER

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 4:30pm by

Any band whose MySpace page claims they hail from “Bongtreal, Canada” is immediately going to be on my good side – and if the music is actually decent, hey!, then I’ll do one of these here stoopid blog posts about ‘em.

And such is the case with Barn Burner, who just signed to Metal Blade. The press release announcing the coupling describes the band as “the 3 headed love child of Iron Maiden, Thin Lizzy and Fu Manchu,” but it’s much simpler to say simply that this is fuzzy, classic stoner rock in the vein of Baroness or Blood Mountain-era Mastodon.

Anyways, I’m digging what I’ve heard of this band so far. I guess we’ll see how Bangers, their Metal Blade debut, is when it’s released in early 2010. In the meantime, here’s a video of the band that they have posted on the aforementioned ; it looks like they’re fun live, doesn’t it?
