WASTING THE WORLD, ONE FLOOD AT A TIME

Friday, November 13th, 2009 at 3:30pm by Vince Neilstein

municipal waste - waste the world tourThe MetalSucks-sponsored Waste The World Tour (featuring Municipal Waste, with Goatwhore, Brutal Truth, Phobia and Cauldron on as support for various dates) is off to a wet start. On the tour’s fifth show — Wednesday night in Houston, TX — a fan decided it’d be a good idea to climb on the pipes hanging from the ceiling during Goatwhore’s set. ‘Cause, ya know, hanging from pipes is always a great idea. The sprinkler system erupted, flooding ensued, and the whole show was forced to evacuate the venue. Fortunately the Meridian had an extra room available, so after an hour of chaos the show went on, faster and harder than ever.

Make sure you catch this tour when it comes through your city. Dates after the jump. Please note that The Accused are no longer part of the tour.

CRUCIFIST’S SLEEP-INDUCING BOREDOM ON DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at 11:30am by Sammy O'Hagar

demon haunted worldDan Lilker is, to use a technical term, a badass motherfucker. As a founding member of Anthrax and un-PC crossover thrashsters S.O.D. and longtime bassist for Nuclear Assault, he had a significant hand in keeping metal filthy in a time when toy poodle hair and Day-Glo spandex were the norm. With deathgrind innovators Brutal Truth and grind supergroup Venomous Concept, he helped build upon the metal he himself innovated, synthesizing punk and hardcore in a way only someone with a true understanding of both could do. A prolific sideman in a lot of awesome/important bands (as well as a pretty decent bassist), Lilker is perhaps one of metal’s great unsung heroes. So, in theory, he’s entitled to a dud album by a lackluster band every now and again. And Crucifist, his shot at black metal, certainly tests his lifetime pass. And though its failures aren’t what plague other prominent musicians’ ill-fated black metal side projects – a lack of understanding of the genre and/or the inability to decide whether it’s paying tribute to or taking the piss out of it – that doesn’t stop Crucifist from being ultimately incredibly dull overall.

VIDEO FOOTAGE OF AT THE GATES AND MUNICIPAL WASTE GETTING FUCKED-UP TOGETHER

Thursday, November 5th, 2009 at 1:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

Reader Brandon Fountain sent us a link to the below video of members of At the Gates and Municipal Waste getting drunk and/or high together on ATG’s awesome reunion tour last year. It’s not really all that exciting, but a) it’s a slow news day, b) it gives you the chance to live vicariously through these very talented musicians, and c) it’s a great excuse to remind you that we’re sponsoring The Waste’s “Waste the World” tour with Goatwhore, Brutal Truth, Phobia and Cauldron. REPULSION LIVE CLIPS!

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 at 4:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

If you’re one of the many sad (and possibly suicidal!) people who wasn’t able to be at this incredible show, here’s your chance to live vicariously through the magic of cameras and editing.

THE ACCUSED DROP OFF METALSUCKS-SPONSORED MUNICIPAL WASTE “WASTE THE WORLD” TOUR

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 3:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

municipal waste - waste the world tour

Bummer. The Accused, who were scheduled to provide support for  some (but not all!) of the dates on the MS sponsored Municipal Waste “Waste the World” tour, have been forced to drop off due to “scheduling conflicts.” Oh well.

The good news is that Goatwhore are still doing all dates from 11/06-11/16, Brutal Truth are still doing all dates from 12/04-12/11, and Phobia, Cauldron, and, of course, The Waste themselves are still doing ALL dates. And hopefully a new support act will be named to step in for The Accused.

All of the bands remaining on the tour are killer. If you’ve never seen MW fuck shit up live, you ain’t seen shit. Get complete dates after the jump.

A GROYSE METSIE FROM EARACHE RECORDS

Thursday, October 8th, 2009 at 2:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

itunesrocktober2009

First of all, for our non-Chosen readers: groyse metsie is Yiddish for a bargain. Don’t say I never taught ya nuthin’.

So. For the month of October (or “Rocktober,” as some clever marketing types are dubbing it), Earache is offering a whole bunch of truly righteous albums from their catalog for download on iTunes at a retardedly low price: $5.99 in the U.S., £4.49 in the U.K., and 4,99EUR in Europe. (The press release tells me that “prices may vary in other regions.” Ha-ha.) Now, I know that most of us music snobs don’t like iTunes because the audio quality isn’t as high as it could be, and there’s a better-than-average chance that a lot of you own most of these albums anyway. But if you can get past the whole “IT’S NOT AS GOOD AS FLAC! Snort snort” thing and/or for some reason DO NOT already own most of these albums, it’s a really, really killer deal.

A complete list of available albums after the jump. At least six or seven of these are classics, and nine or so are still awesome and could be classics, so they’re totally worth the six bucks or whatever.

And then one of them is by Oceano.

GET YOUR INJECTION OF PIG DESTROYER

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 at 4:38pm by Axl Rosenberg

Besides a pair of performances by Gojira, Pig Destroyer’s Brooklyn show with Brutal Truth and Repulsion was one of the best gigs I’ve attended this year. And, but of course, those hairy apes from Metal Injection were on hand to capture the insanity on tape, so that those of you who couldn’t make can see how awesome it was, and weep for what you missed.

So here’s PD playing “Loathsome” off of Phantom Limb. Check back with Metal Injection throughout the week for more grind-tastic footage of the show.

And, oh yeah: check out Blake Harrison with the power tools. Rad.

AN OUTTAKE FROM THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? NO, IT’S JUST FOOTAGE OF PIG DESTROYER!!!

Monday, August 3rd, 2009 at 11:00am by Axl Rosenberg

If you’ve been reading this site on a regular basis, you’re aware that I’ve been very, very, very excited for this past Friday night’s Brutal Truth/Pig Destroyer/Repulsion show, and I was not let down.

There were some minor hiccups – Repulsion went on nearly an hour later than scheduled, which might not have been so bothersome if the Brooklyn Masonic Temple wasn’t hotter than the fucking sun, or even if you didn’t have to wait on not one but two lines to get a drink (one to get your drink ticket, the other to get your actual drink). Plus, when Repulsion started playing, they seemed to be having sound issues for a few songs (compounded by the fact that moshers kept slamming into the soundboard which, for reasons beyond me, was on a platform on unlocked wheels), and no one thought to bring down the house lights until part way through the set. Also, I felt a little bad for Brutal Truth – they killed, as expected, but a substantial portion of the crowd filed out following Pig Destroyer, who ended up being the night’s true headliners.

Then again… of course Pig Destroyer ended up being the night’s true headliners. Not only did they kill as expected (and their 45 minute-ish set felt wwwaaaayyy too short), but Blake Harrison had power tools on stage for the express purpose of making needless semi-pyro. Power tools!!!

ANYWAY, there was a whole lotta stage divin’ throughout the night. But during Pig Destroyer’s last song, it seemed like there were at least a dozen people on stage, all going nuts and stage diving at once. Below you can watch some not-so-great footage of the event that I found on YouTube (thanks, presspass!). If anyone has any better footage of this or any other part of the show, hit me up!

COUNTDOWN TO BLACKENED MUSIC, PART 3: BRUTAL TRUTH’S “BIRTH OF IGNORANCE”

Friday, July 31st, 2009 at 5:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

And finally, we have New York’s own Brutal Truth. Their new album, Evolution Through Revolution, is one of the best of the year so far (read Satan Rosenbloom’s review here), which isn’t really surprising, because they’re one of those bands where everything they touch seems to turn to gold – or, rather, awesome, awesome grindcore.

Here they are doing “Birth of Ignorance” in Copenhagen in 1993.

Is it time for the show yet? Is it? Is it???

COUNTDOWN TO BLACKENED MUSIC, PART 1: REPULSION’S “BODILY DISMEMBERMENT”

Friday, July 31st, 2009 at 4:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m very, very, very excited about tonight’s Blackened Music Series show with Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer and Repulsion (And it’s a book release party for Decibel’s Precious Metal, which I have read, and which is totally worth the dough). And thus, as I count down the final hours to what I’m 99.9% sure is going to be one of the best, if not the best, shows of the year, I’m gonna post some live clips of the bands playing.

First up we have the legendary Repulsion. If ya don’t know Repulsion, well, shame on you. Learning about them is the easiest thing in the world: they only have one full-length, 1986’s Horrified, which is pretty short (it is a grind album, after all), and which pretty much influenced all grind that came afterwards. Decibel even named Horrified the best grind album of all time earlier this year; I don’t know if I’d go that far, but it does rule, hard, and the band – in their first New York concert ever – will be playing it in its entirety tonight.

Here they are doing the track “Bodily Dismemberment” in 2003.

END YOUR WEEK WITH A NEW BRUTAL TRUTH VIDEO

Friday, July 17th, 2009 at 4:38pm by Axl Rosenberg

This is for the song “Sugar Daddy,” off of the band’s awesome Evolution Through Revolution (read Satan Rosenbloom’s review here).

Awesome grind just seems to be falling like mana from Heaven this year, don’t it?

THE BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR?

Monday, May 18th, 2009 at 12:11pm by Axl Rosenberg

blackened-july-31-poster

When I read that Repulsion, Pig Destroyer and Brutal Truth are all playing a show together at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on July 31, my head literally exploded. I don’t mean “literally” the way some people misuse that word; I mean I am actually typing this right now sans melon. Pretty crazy, I know.

EVOLUTION THROUGH REVOLUTION: THE TRULY BEAUTIFUL & BRUTALLY TRUTHFUL RETURN OF BRUTAL TRUTH

Monday, May 11th, 2009 at 10:45am by Satan Rosenbloom

brutaltruth_etr

Good news: despite a decade-plus gap between full-lengths, Evolution Through Revolution-era Brutal Truth is just as wooly and weird as the band’s pre-millennial lineups. Reckless grind and punk tempos still hurtle fearlessly and skid into death metal dirges. Kevin Sharp howls the kind of anti-everything sociopolitical invective you’d expect to hear from that crazy old war vet that accosts people outside the gas station, except he’s probably right about it all. Even setting aside the album’s wildman sax solos and noise samples, chaos reigns on Evolution Through Revolution. New guitarist Erik Burke’s abrasive diminished chords grind against themselves in earbleeding dissonance; “Itch” could be Immolation gone grind, its cycling guitars vomiting disharmonic sparks.

RELAPSE CONTAMINATION TOUR UPDATE: OBSCURA FORCED TO DROP OFF, TOUR CUT SHORT

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 9:45am by Vince Neilstein

Due to illness, Obscura have been forced to cut short the remainder of their North American tour. The MetalSucks-sponsored Contamination Tour will continue on through May 10th with label-mates Graves of Valor, with appearances on select dates from Brutal Truth and Hero Destroyed.

Obscura vocalist /guitarist Steffen Kummerer issued the following; “Several nights ago, after struggling with illness throughout this tour, I’ve lost my singing voice entirely and can barely speak. At this juncture, it’s best for me to rest rather than deliver anything less than exceptional performances. For all the cities we’ll miss, we’ll be back in the winter to make-up these dates. Thanks to everyone who made our first North American Tour so amazing. We’re looking forward to returning again in the winter.”

The tour will conclude earlier than expected with the May 11th through 14th dates being cancelled. Affected cities are as follows; Danbury, CT, New York City, Baltimore and Philadelphia. A list of on-going shows is below.

May 5 Southgate, MI Modern Exchange
May 6 Cleveland, OH Peabody’s (FREE show!)
May 7 Syracuse, NY Lost Horizon (w/ BRUTAL TRUTH)
May 8 Pittsburgh, PA 31st St Pub (w/ HERO DESTROYED)
May 9 Allentown, PA Sterling Hotel (w/ BRUTAL TRUTH)
May 10 Boston, MA The Church (w/ BRUTAL TRUTH, REVOCATION)

All ticket winners and guest list requests will be honored for the remaining dates.

DEPENDING ON YOUR MOOD…

Two excellent – albeit very different – upcoming metal releases are currently streaming in their entirety:

  • If you feel like killing someone today, then Brutal Truth’s reunion album Evolution Through Revolution is streaming here. Make sure you’re wearing a diaper when you listen because the record will almost certainly rip you a new anus. The album’s official release comes April 14.
  • If you feel like hugging someone today, then Lacuna Coil’s latest, Shallow Life, is streaming here. It’s a Lacuna Coil album, which is to say it’s a real toe-tapper.  It’ll hit stores here in North America on April 21 and the rest of the world at various other dates somewheres about April 21.
