Hard to believe it’s already the CMJ Music Marathon again; time passes so fucking quickly my brain can’t quite comprehend it. Before we know it it’ll be winter, which means soon enough we’ll be old men and then we’ll be dead, and then humans will flood themselves off this planet into oblivion and we’ll all be dead. But at least we get a week’s worth of cool metal shows first!

You all already know about the MetalSucks / Metal Injection / 1000 Knives CMJ showcase featuring Kvelertak, Skeletonwitch, Barn Burner, Turbid North and Battlecross, Friday, October 21st at Club Europa in Brooklyn (tickets here), right? Did you know that we’re giving away FREE BEER between 6 and 7pm??? It’s true, courtesy of our friends at E One Entertainment. The CMJ Music Marathon — aka the slightly tamer, lamer, older brother of SXSW who moved to NYC to pursue his dreams but fell slightly flat — is now upon us. Here’s my wrap of metal-worthy events happening this week, of which there are fewer than last year. Feel free to add others in the comments.

• Fri. Oct 23: MetalInsider.net Slayer World Painted Blood listening party @ Webster Hall. 3-6pm. RSVP here.
• Fri, Oct 23: Tee Pee Records Showcase @ Union Pool, featuring Priestess, Nebula, Naam, Hopewell, Quest For Fire, Kreisor, Imaad Wasif with Two Part Beast, and Weird Owl.
• Fri, Oct 23: Relapse Records / Brooklyn Vegan Showcase @ Fontana’s, featuring Revocation, Misery Index, Salome, Howl, Black Anvil, Complete Failure and Gloominous Doom.

So it’s CMJ Music Marathon time here in NYC. This means the following:

1. Lots of annoying indie rock hipsters strutting around town like they’re the shit. If you see one, please punch them in the face.
2. Lots of annoying music industry types from all over the country and abroad, strutting around town like they’re the shit. If you see one, please punch them in the face.
3. Lots of annoying indie rock hipsters in bands playing showcases for annoying music industry types. If you find yourself at one of said showcases, please toss a hand grenade into the crowd and do us all a favor.

Now that that’s out of the way… we’ve compiled a list of potentially interesting hard rock and metal shows that are officially CMJ-sanctioned.
