DARKEST HOUR’S RYAN PARRISH SPEAKS OUT ABOUT A TOURING MUSICIAN’S GREATEST DILEMMA

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at 2:30pm by

One of our most favoritest drummers, Ryan Parrish, from one of our most favoritest bands, Darkest Hour, has launched a new column at one of our most favoritest websites, Metal Injection. It’s called “A View from Behind the Drumkit” (‘Cause he’s a drummer. Get it?), and for the inaugural edition of his column, he’s chosen to tackle one of the most pressing topics for any touring musician: “When do we eat?”

Here’s a sample:

WHY DO METAL NERDS LIKE THESE DEATHCORE BANDS????

Monday, May 16th, 2011 at 4:30pm by

From what I understand, it is not okay for “real metal” fans to like any deathcore bands. For example, you are not allowed to be into both Deathspell Omega and Winds Of Plague, because WoP don’t have the right haircuts or clothes to be considered a “legit metal band.” It is also important to share your unsolicited, excessively strong opinions whenever deathcore bands come up, letting everybody know that you “are into real metal,” and that “deathcore is the worst shit ever.”

With that said, I’m confused about how there are a few deathcore bands that seem to get a pass from metal nerds: Darkest Hour, The Faceless, Between The Buried And Me, etc. The same people who get very, very angry about the popularity of bands like Suiside Silence or Miss May I love The Black Dahlia Murder, All Shall Perish, and The Red Chord, which is weird to me because they do not really sound any different.

Can anyone help me understand this??? Why are some deathcore bands considered “generic garbage for idiots who shop at Hot Topic” but other deathcore bands are “brilliant musicians who keep pushing the boundaries of the genre,” according to metal nerds???

HISTORY REPEATS FOR DYING FETUS

Friday, May 6th, 2011 at 12:30pm by

As regular readers are aware, I’m usually dead-set against cover albums, which tend to feature meaningless, generally inferior versions of great songs the listener already owns in their original, classic forms.

But I’m willing to give Dying Fetus the benefit of the doubt that if they’ve made a covers album, it’s worth listening to. They’ve earned that much. Why? BECAUSE THEY’RE DYING FUCKING FETUS, that’s why. Duh.

So. In celebration of both their twentieth anniversary and their stint on the year’s edition of the MetalSucks-sponsored Summer Slaughter tour, this July the  band will release History Repeats…, which will not only feature the band re-imaging tracks from some of death n’ grinds finest (Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, etc.), but will also feature “Rohypnol,” a brand new song. You might know rohypnol as “roofies,” or “the date rape drug.” So this tune is probably a charming power ballad in the vein of Bon Jovi’s “Bed of Roses.”

History Repeats… comes out July 19 on Relapse, and is limited to 5,000 copies. You can get it a f.y.e. stores, or just pre-order it directly from Relapse.

The full track list for this bad mother is after the jump, along with those Summer Slaughter dates. Other bands on the bill are The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Darkest Hour, Six Feet Under, Oceano, Fleshgod Apocalypse, As Blood Runs Black, Powerglove, and Within the Ruins.

WITHIN THE RUINS JOINS SUMMER SLAUGHTER

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 at 3:30pm by

Remember when this year’s Summer Slaughter (which we’re sponsoring!) was announced, there was this fan poll to determine who the last band added to the bill should be?

Well, Within the Ruins have been announced as the winners! They’ll join The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Darkest Hour, Six Feet Under, Dying Fetus, As Blood Runs Black, Oceano, Fleshgod Apocalypse, and Powerglove for all dates on the trek. Our own Dave Mustein wrote of the band, “WTR don’t suck live; their performance is nearly as good as on record, which is pleasantly surprising due to the ferocious technicality of their music.” So the band’s presence should just enhance your Summer Slaughter excitement.

Here are dates again, in case you need ‘em:

SUMMER SLAUGHTER DATES!

Thursday, April 21st, 2011 at 12:40pm by

When I was growing up, summer Slaughter meant a hot July night listening to Mark Slaughter complain about Vinnie Vincent’s body odor between songs at your local Enormodome. But life in America is awesomer now (not srs) and Summer Slaughter now means extreme metal piled eyeball-high and ballz-deep, plus your chance to make kissy faces at Mike Schleibaum, not Dana Strum. And since MetalSucks is an official Summer Slaughter sponsor, you can give us your thanks for the fun. We’ll pass them on to the other sponsors, promise. Dates after we jump you:

LET’S TALK ABOUT TEENAGE GIRLS & TUMBLR

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011 at 12:40pm by

Typical Tumblr user: airheaded teenage girl who listens to metalcore bands that have cute singers.

When it comes to music, teenage girls make the world go ’round. It’s a fact: they are the ones who obsessively fawn over every word out of a band’s mouth, go to every show within a 200 mile radius of their parents’ house, and most importantly, they actually buy stuff (whether CDs or merch). Before you rage, I’m not trolling– this is how it’s worked for as long as pop music has been around (and explains why D.R.U.G.S. sold three times more records than Darkest Hour last week). Basically, any band who ignores the social currency and purchasing power of teenage girls is a bunch of dumb-dumbs.

While Facebook and Bandcamp are great tools for streaming your music and communicating with your fans, I think Tumblr is the most interesting social media platform right now. It’s the closest thing we have to a magical window into the minds of the consumers who drive the music industry (teenage girls), but I haven’t really seen many bands/labels take full advantage of it.

In this post, I will discuss the dynamics of Tumblr culture, share some examples of typical content and draw a few conclusions about what it means for bands and labels who want to market their product to not only Tumblr users, but the lucrative market of teenage girls in general. Also, please follow my Tumblr to keep your finger on the pulse of contemporary youth culture!

THE DUBSTEP DEBATE RAGES ON: GRINDSTEP?!?!?

Friday, April 1st, 2011 at 12:30pm by

(from TheChive.com)

Like it or hate it, dubstep has made its presence felt in the metal scene and it is not going anywhere any time soon. Ever since I first posted about “djentstep” it seems like we’ve been getting just about one reader “this is so aewsome you gotta check it out their the best!!!” email per day with another link to a metal/dubstep mash-up. And as Axl reported yesterday, even Korn are getting in on the dubstep party to the displeasure of ears everywhere.

One of the better dubstep jamz to come our way is this interpretation of one of my favorite Darkest Hour songs, “Convalescence,” done by Arkturus. Reader Isaac Lunsford sent this in, and apparently the DH dudes were so tickled by it they posted it on their own Facebook page:

FEAR, EMPTINESS, DECIBEL: THE MAY ’11 COVER STORY REVEALED!

Thursday, March 24th, 2011 at 4:30pm by

Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Here’s managing editor Andrew Bonazelli…

J. Bennett stopped by Decibel HQ last month; naturally, we took the opportunity to grab some adult beverages. It didn’t take long for me to punch up some Kylie in a jukebox that was doing just fine with Use Your Illusion and Ride the Lightning. Nor did it take some random backpatch hombre long—like maybe a second and a half—to cleanse the bar of Ms. Minogue’s exotic stylings with something off of Relentless. Little did this kid know that my drinking comrade was in town specifically to meet up with Bobby Liebling for our May cover story. Ah, the seren-dipshittery—a nice bit of low comedy before an interview that I assume blew even Bennett’s mind.

Said cover story is an instant favorite for multiple reasons, but I think number one is this brief aside from Sean “Pellet” Pelletier, longtime Liebling supporter/sufferer, describing the abode of the Pentagram mainman’s parents.

“There were Cocoa Krispies stuck to the ceiling because Bobby threw a bowl of cereal.”

That’s what I call living. I mean, you don’t need heroin and crack to do that shit, although I suppose it helps. On a moderately more serious note, while the cover’s in simple black and white, the issues detailed therein—loyalty, hedonism, spirituality—span a broad, colorful spectrum. Liebling has defied the odds in virtually every facet of his life—despite endless, infamous struggles with addiction, he’s concocted an absolutely essential proto-doom canon, and lived long enough to see a lethal cocktail of self-sabotage and bum luck transform into international adulation. Worthy subject matter—funny, heartbreaking and, again, sometimes mind-blowing.

And the rest of the issue is no slouch. We’ve covered the Napalm Death flexi already, but there are outlandish and informative features on Burzum, Gridlink, Kylesa, Krallice, Darkest Hour (specifically John Henry’s metal mutha), Obscura, the Scion Rock Fest and shitloads more. Hit it or quit it.

You can buy the May 2011 issue of Decibel here, or get a full subscription to ensure you never miss an issue, or of those awesome flexi discs!

WHEN GOOD MUSICIANS JOIN BAD BANDS

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 at 2:00pm by

I understand that musicians have bills to pay and mouths to feed like anyone else, and that if there’s a way — any way — for you to make your living by playing music, well, that’s pretty fortunate.

Still, I’m always a little put-off when a musician I admire either has to or chooses to squander his talent by playing with some crappy band. Does anyone really believe that there aren’t better ways that current Korn-holers Ray Luzier and Shane Gibson could be spending their time?

So. Recently two more dudes I admire have joined bands I could live without: Kris Norris, formerly of Darkest Hour, has joined Straight Line Stitch, apparently on a full-time basis, while Gil Sharone, formerly of The Dillinger Escape Plane, plays on the new Otep album, Atavist. (I don’t get the impression that he’ll be touring with the band or anything like that, though.)

THE DARKEST HOUR LEGACY TOUR CONTEST WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Friday, March 18th, 2011 at 2:30pm by

Props to reader Nico C. for reminding us about the Darkest Hour Legacy Tour contest we hosted back in November and December. Ya see, uh, you all know we like to partake in the green herb from time to time and that said herb can have an effect on the memory. Well, umm… we just straight up forgot to choose a winner.

But fear not! Good things come to those who wait; in this case “good things” are one t-shirt from each of the bands on the tour — Darkest Hour, Veil of Maya, Periphery and Revocation — and “those who wait” is our lucky winner Shaun Reeves. We asked “Which Darkest Hour song is your favorite of all-time, and why?” and Shaun answered thusly:

Convalescence. Sure it’s not their heaviest or most technical, but it was one of the first metal songs I had ever heard. The first time I heard it was when I saw the video for it on a victory records sampler. I straight up laughed the first time I saw it, I thought it was terrible, and the lead singer looked like an angry nerd who got beat up in high school too much. As I gradually started getting into heavier music, I watched it again, and it changed my life. It was the heaviest thing I had ever heard, yet it was so melodic. Kris Norris instantly became my icon, his solo was the greatest one I had ever heard. That song not only turned me into a metal head, it turned me into a metal guitarist.

So, congrats Shaun, and sorry for the delay. Enjoy those shirts. Darkest Hour’s new jam The Human Romance is out now.

NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: AND THE BEST SELLING METAL DEBUT IS… KOPEK??

Thursday, March 10th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

Neilstein Soundscam

Last week’s best selling “Hard Music” album was a Bon Jovi greatest hits package. I make no effort to hide the fact that I enjoy Bon Jovi from time to time, but COME ON FANS OF HEAVY MUSIC WHAT THE FUCK?! Following Bon Jovi, the #2, #3 and #4 charting hard music releases were a 27-week old Linkin Park album, Red State Rock and a GN’R greatist hits album. #5 was Sick Puppies. Sick fucking Puppies! Oy veys mere. Get it together people!

Other than Sick Puppies, the sole new release to chart in its first week out was the new album by Kopek. Who? Exactly. Take solace, fans of heavy music: at least D.R.U.G.S. are selling records.

A day late but never a dollar short, let’s look at last week’s completely irrelevant record sales numbers:

NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: WHO THE FUCK ARE D.R.U.G.S.???

Neilstein SoundscamLike Axl said we’re getting on a plane shortly, so let’s make this shit quick. Some emo haircut band called D.R.U.G.S. (just typing that makes me queasy) sold a lot of records, and Devildriver and Darkest Hour did pretty well too. Numbers and commentary after the jump:

I kid, I kid.

To complete their hat trick of awesomeness this week, Darkest Hour have released a new video, for the song “Savor the Kill.” It’s not embeddable right now, but click on the pretty girl below to watch it. In case awesome Gothenburgian metal and Zack Snyder-esque speed ramping isn’t your thing, you should know that the video also has a second hot girl in it (who, inevitably, tussles with the first), and a real live wolf as well.

“Savor the Kill” comes off of Darkest Hour’s latest, The Human Romance. It comes out on Tuesday via eOne, but you can already stream it in full right here.

DARKEST HOUR WIN “MOST ROMANTIC BAND OF THE DAY” AWARD

Monday, February 14th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

Holy crap, there’s a lot of new music coming out today. It’s like everyone knew that all the lonely metal heads would home alone jerking off, so they all released new songs at once. It’s hard to even keep up with it all!

One that’s worth keeping up with, though, is Darkest Hour’s “Love is a Weapon.” It’s another new song from their forthcoming offering, The Human Romance, and I think it’s my favorite yet.

Why? Well, for one thing, it amalgamates my two favorite emotions: rage and melancholy. But, perhaps more importantly, it just hits all my g-spots: it’s well-written, it’s well-played, and it’s well-produced, by some dude named Peter Wichers. I ain’t never heard of him before, but I think he could have a bright future ahead of him if he continues to do work as good as this.

To listen, go to the band’s Facebook page and tell the world that you want Darkest Hour to be your valentine. Let’s be real here, Mike Carrigan is prettier than your real valentine anyway.

The Human Romance comes out next Tuesday, February 22, on eOne. It is the perfect music to make love to.

THE HUMAN ABSTRACT EXTRACT A MEMBER

DARKEST HOUR: JUST “YOUR EVERYDAY DISASTER”

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at 3:00pm by

We still haven’t gotten to hear the new Darkest Hour album, The Human Romance, in its entirety — but Chris Dick gives it an 8 outta 10 score in the March 2011 issue of Decibel, the first new song from the record that the band released, “Savor the Kill,” was awesome, and now the second new song from the record the band has released, “Your Everyday Disaster,” has also proven to be pretty wicked. So it’s looking like Darkest Hour have, once again, delivered the goods.

Which is no shock… they’re Darkest Hour! And the great Peter Wichers produced this record! So the odds were pretty much always in DH’s favor.

And “Disaster” sounds like classic Darkest Hour in pretty much every way imaginable. So check that shit out here.

The Human Romance comes out February 22 on eOne. Get stoked.
