SURPRISE! REVOCATION IS DEAD!

Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 2:00pm by

I’m not really sure how I didn’t know this, but apparently Revocation covered Faith No More’s “Surprise! You’re Dead!” for the deluxe digital iTunes edition of last year’s Chaos of Forms. And if you’re like me and you didn’t know this and you didn’t buy the deluxe digital blah blah of Chaos, you’re in luck, ’cause the cover is now available for streaming below.

It’s not really any different from the original song — one of FNM’s more straight-ahead metallica ditties — save for the fact that Dave Davidson’s vocal performance is that much raspier than Mike Patton’s was. Still, the tune is clearly a good fit for Revocation, so I’m not gonna gripe too much.

Here, see what you think…

INTO THE CHAOS OF DAVE DAVIDSON’S GUITAR FORMS

Friday, November 18th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

Guitar dorks: check out this JamPlay.com interview with MetalSucks-deemed #1 Modern Metal Guitarist Dave Davidson. There’s lotsa great stuff in here; Dave’s musical education, his influences from jazz (Pat Martino, Wayne Krantz) to metal (Marty Friedman, Jeff Waters) to contemporaries like Emil Werstler, the history of Revocation, the new record Chaos of Forms and more. There’s lots of sage advice for guitarists, and we even learn how Dave got his rockstar name (hint: he wasn’t born with it!).

As a reminder, we’re offering MetalSucks readers free one-week trials at JamPlay.com, where you can take online lessons with Davidson, Tosin Abasi, Emil Werstler and more. Click here to sign up.

REVOCATION TRAVEL “ACROSS FORESTS AND FJORDS” LIVE IN NYC

Monday, October 10th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

On August 20th, just two days after the release of their new record Chaos of Forms, Revocation came, they saw and they conquered NYC as part of a quick 3-show run of dates to celebrate the album’s release. Metal Injection was there at The Webster Hall Studio to film four songs from the band’s raging headline set, and the results, as usual, completely capture the moment.

Instead of posting “Dismantle the Dictator,” a great song to be sure but one you’ve heard a million times by now, how about “Across Forests and Fjords,” a galloping, romping deep cut from Existence is Futile that also happens to be instrumental. Not that I’ve got a problem with Dave Davidson’s vocals — I think he’s a great frontman (in addition to being a great guitarist, of course) — but sometimes it’s refreshing when a vocalist lays back and lets the instruments do ALL the talking. “Across Forests and Fjords” would be a great song with or without vocals regardless; check it out, and check out the other three live clips here.

REVOCATION BONANZA!

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011 at 10:40am by

[UPDATE: Apparently Axl already posted the shred vid while I was away. Oops! Still, check out the new studio video after the jump (and watch the shred vid again if you so please). -Ed.]

In case you still think we’re loony for choosing Revocation’s Dave Davidson as #1 on our Top 25 Modern Metal Guitarists list, this video of Davidson and fellow Revocation axe-slinger Dan Gargiulo shredding it up in the Jackson Guitars showroom in California should do wonders to help the cause. The MS reader whose sexy initials are actually J.A.M. also points out that it’s a great compliment to the Rigged features both Davidson and Gargiulo wrote for MetalSucks, as both dudes are playing the gear they highlighted here.

Dudes can play, amirite? It’s interesting to see that Gargiulo and Davidson split up the solo in “Cradle Robber;” watch out Dave, maybe next year Dan’ll steal your coveted #1 MS throne.

Meanwhile Revocation have released the third studio video from the sessions of their new record Chaos of Forms, which comes out August 16th on Relapse (pre-order here). Having finally gotten a chance to listen to that record in full upon returning from my trip to Alaska… HO. LEE. SHIT! Stream the tracks “Cradle Robber” and “No Funeral” at Revocation’s Facebook page to see what I’m talking about.

Watch that third studio vid after the jump. In one final dose of Revocation-related news, check out three new demo tracks by experimental metallers Artificial Brain, featuring Dan Gargiulo, at their Bandcamp page. Good stuff, if not all that Revocation-y.

RIGGED: REVOCATION’S DAVE DAVIDSON (GUITAR)

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011 at 4:00pm by

Rigged

Welcome back to Rigged, in which your favorite metal musicians take you on a step-by-step rundown of their entire live rig. Revocation are currently touring North American with Forbidden, White Wizzard and Havok — brought to you by MetalSucks (dates here) — so we asked both Revocation axemen Dave Davidson and Dan Gargiulo to take us on a tour of their gear setups. In case you missed it here’s Forbidden guitarist Steve Smyth’s rig. Next week we’ll feature the newest member of the Revocation clan Dan Gargiulo, but in the meantime here’s the MS crack panel #1 ranked Modern Metal Guitarist Dave Davidson:

Hello, fellow guitar nerds and gear snobs! Dave from Revocation here, giving you a quick rundown on my live rig.

I use Jackson WR1 Warriors with Dimarzio pick ups (D Activators in the bridge and a Super 2 in the neck position on my white one, and a Liquifire in the neck position on my red one). To me the Jackson Warrior is one of the most badass looking guitars on the market and as an added bonus they also play great and sound killer! I just got my new custom a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to put it down since.

Both guitars are strung with D’Addario strings with a light top and heavy bottom, .10-.52. I had been using .10-.46 but I find that for me the heavier gauge on the bottom has a much better resistance, so when I’m tremolo picking the string stays nice and tight.

LEGACY TOUR DIARY, ENTRY #2: AN UPDATE FROM REVOCATION’S DAVE DAVIDSON

Monday, November 22nd, 2010 at 3:30pm by

Revocation - Dave Davidson

As part of our sponsorship of The Legacy Tour, featuring Darkest Hour, Veil of Maya, Periphery and Revocation, one member from each band will be penning an exclusive blog entry for MetalSucks to run during the tour (get a full list of tour dates here). Our first entry featured Veil of Maya guitarist Marc Okubo taking us on a run-through of his entire live rig. Now here’s Revocation’s Dave Davidson with an update from the road:

Hey guys, Dave from Revocation here, checking in from the Darkest Hour Legacy tour.

It’s been a little over a week since we’ve been out and we’re currently in Cleveland getting ready to play at Peabody’s. So far the tour has been going great, all the bands are killing it every night and all the dudes are cool as fuck. Everyone’s been getting along really well right off the bat so we’re stoked that we still have three more weeks left to rage.
