HOW TO MAKE IT BIG AS A DEATHCORE YOUTUBE VOCAL COVER ARTIST

Friday, November 20th, 2009 at 11:30am by Vince Neilstein

Sometimes we get so caught caught up in minutae inside our little metal Internet bubble that we lose perspective on the bigger picture. Take this lampoon video from Current.com that highlights deathcore YouTube vocal covers (including our favorite, SeƱor Bivins) and mocks the differences between deathcore, death metal and metalcore. I’m pretty sure the guy in the video “gets” it and is playing dumb to make a point… but let’s be honest with ourselves; while the minutae between these micro-genres may seem important to us now, 200 years from now people aren’t going to give a flying fuck. By then it’ll all just be called “early 21st century metal” or some equally all-inclusive blanket term that disregards all the differences we argue about on a daily basis. It’s all just dudes screaming over loud guitars and fast drums in the end.

Anyway, this video is pretty funny. If there’s one thing we and the presumably indie rock-centric audience this video is geared towards can agree on, it’s that deathcore scene kids are fucking stupid.

“DEATHCORE IS NOT SCENE”

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 11:00am by Axl Rosenberg

Meet Senor Bivins. I read about him this morning on Sergeant D’s Stuff You Will Hate. Bivins posts lots and lots and lots of videos of himself on YouTube doing those vocal covers of deathcore songs that we find so amusing here at the Mansion. And the Sarge is pissed because apparently Bivins gets a lot of pussy from doing it – or, at least, he gets to take photos of himself standing next to semi-cute scene girls making obscene gestures:

It’s not clear to me whether or not he’s actually fucking these chicks or what. If he is getting groupies without even being in a band, then, well, I guess that’s a whole new scam and maybe someday Neil Strauss will write a book about him or something.

ANYWAY, even more interesting is this video of him defending deathcore as “not scene.” Check it out:

POSSIBLY MY FAVORITE INTERVIEW OF THE YEAR THAT WE DIDN’T ACTUALLY CONDUCT OURSELVES

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 at 2:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Metal Injection just posted this video interivew with Guy Kozowyk from The Red Chord. Vince and I were standing just off-camera, obnoxiously watching the interview take place when we probably should have been minding our own business, and at the time, I thought it was one of the funniest, most honest interviews I’d seen recently; I’m glad to have now discovered that it holds up even if you’re not in the room. Guy is not only insanely entertaining, but he’s brutally honest in a way a lot metal musicians would never be – to wit, see his thoughts on Suicide Silence and deathcore in general. Even if you don’t agree with him, you gotta admit, this is some funny shit.

Also, clearly “The Panteradactyl” should be the hot new dance move in the mosh pit.

By the way, in case you’re somehow not in the know, Metal Injection has loads more cool interviews and live footage and lotsa other shit. Go visit them. It’s what all the cool kids are doing.

ANIMA’S THE DAILY GRIND; COMPETENTLY GOING WHERE MANY DEATHCORE MEN HAVE GONE BEFORE

Monday, September 22nd, 2008 at 2:34pm by Christopher Roddy

I recently ran into a guy with whom I used to hang in High School back in the Eighties. We were both really into Metal and as the decade progressed our tastes kept leaning heavier. He got me into a little-known band that actually recorded under the name “Death” (”Dude! The album’s called “Scream Bloody Gore” – you’re going to LOVE this!) and I introduced him to a new act called Obituary that I believed would never be bested as far as heaviness and brutality were concerned (two decades later I still cling to that observation).

WIGGER SLAM!

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 at 3:27pm by Vince Neilstein

The otherwise respectable reporters over at Metal Inquisition have had a hard-on for Wigger Slam, a metal sub-genre of dubious origin (see: Wikipedia), for… Well, pretty much since the site launched early this year. I can’t say as I get what all the hubbub is about — to these ears, wigger slam is basically just another, less cringe-inducing name for a genre we’ve all grown to hate — deathcore — with an occasional nu-metal influence — as if this is supposed to be a good thing.

So… What the dillio? Am I missing something profound by failing to see the appeal of suburban white boys in sideways painter caps and ridiculous gauges in their ears who site both Napalm Death and Korn as influences? (see: the Deathcore feature in the most recent issue of Revolver). Or am I too old to understand?
